The Material Moves Shop is closed until Thursday 23rd April.
Im having a short break in London , visiting my friend, indulging in all the amazing materials moving on curious colourful folks at the London Colour Walk that meets at Spitalfields Market, 3rd Thursday of every month.
What a joyful thing to do.
I wore my me made clothes, of course, and got plenty of compliments too, which is even more meaningful when you've made them yourself.

A lot of the posts I make of garments being made here in the Material Moves studio are those of my learners, so I thought it about time to show you some of the things I make for myself.
I'm slow these days, my hands have never fully recovered, so it can often take me months to complete a garment, fitting my own sewing in between classes, shop, and admin. I also like to demonstrate techniques with things I'm making.
Here's the Francesca shirt by Style Arc, which Ive sewn before, this time making it in a silk I found years ago, probably at the Knitting and Stitching show. I am really pleased to have finally decided on what to do with it, I think it's going to be fab, I've got a special event coming up to wear it, but it may end up as a favourite blouse to wear every day, hopefully improving my dopermine levels with the lush colours.
I've made a few adaptions to the pattern, deciding to make it edge to edge with self covered buttons and rouleaux loops, as the silk is probably too delicate for buttonholes. I'm using French seams, darts, a gathered collar, and self covered buttons with rouleaux loops.

Trouser fitting course, Day 3
More tweaks, more trying on.
Drafting new pocket shapes.
Changing pleats at front for darts for a more comfortable and flattering fit, & calculating the correct position.
More trying on. Then, the final adaption of patterns, and clients each go home with a great fitting new trouser pattern to make up in fabrics of their choice.
Fab weekend.

An advanced dressmaking course with a focus on fitting trousers over a long weekend.

Friday 20th, Saturday 21st & Sunday 22nd March 2026.

This course is suitable for the more experienced sewists and beginners with moderate experience. You should be familiar with using a sewing machine

We will take a comprehensive list of your measurements, to help you make pattern adjustments and make a calico toile on which you will be able to make further adjustments to ensure a well fitting garment before cutting from more expensive fabric choices.

Toile (twahl)..... a practice version of a garment made to test and perfect fitting and design.

Day 1: Style, Shape, Fit

I'll be helping you choose appropriate patterns to help develop your own design skills and ideas.
We will take body measurements and begin to adjust your choice of pattern in order to make trousers that fit your shape.

Day 2: The First Cut

Find out why its important to prepare your fabric and pattern ready for cutting by specific methods to ensure great results, which can be often better than some shop bought clothes. I'll guide you step by step to confidently cut your pattern pieces from the cloth, make markings to help you fit your pieces together. There will be more tuition on using tools and the sewing machine.

Day 3 : Pin, Tack, Fit, Adjust, Sew, Fit

A full day to continue with the making of your toile, I'll show you how to assess and rectify fitting issues.

Places on this course are £300.00 which includes patterns , to be chosen in advance, and materials. There is a maximum of 6 places for this course.
