It commits us to support the Armed Forces community: serving personnel, reservists, veterans, and their families, in how we recruit and how we work.

We know what Service people bring. Our Operations Director, Wave Crookes, spent years in the Royal Navy before co-founding SeaGrown. Signing the Covenant puts our name to something we already understand first-hand.

This is what happens when you build a new habitat in the open ocean!

While our science team was onshore this week discussing marine ecosystem services at the Restoring Meadow Marsh and Reef (ReMeMaRe) conference, the crew aboard Bright Blue sent this footage back from the Scarborough Marine Recovery Zone. The wildlife has well and truly found us.

Out here, we grow seaweed using the Kelpedo system. That growing biomass creates a physical, thriving home for marine life, and the local seabirds are taking full advantage. Our data shows an 8.1x increase in Kittiwake abundance around the systems, alongside a more than 100-fold rise in feeding activity.

We are always thrilled to see the North Sea responding like this. The theory is important, but seeing the ecosystem thrive in real time is exactly why we do this work!

Two days of turning marine ambition into action, right here on our doorstep.

Prof Laura Robinson, Cpt Wave Crookes, and Dr Hong Chin Ng have just wrapped up an excellent couple of days at the Restoring Meadow Marsh and Reef (ReMeMaRe) conference at the Scarborough Spa. It was a privilege to share our data on ecosystem services in the North Sea and discuss the very real potential of Nature-based Marine Recovery with 350 industry experts.

A sincere thank you to Roger Proudfoot for championing Scarborough, and to the Restoring Meadow Marsh and Reef (ReMeMaRe) and Ocean and Coastal Futures (OCF) teams for giving us the floor to share our findings.

The conversations onshore are essential. Now, it is back to the water to keep building the evidence.

We are gearing up for the new season, and this is an opportunity to join our expanding crew.

Out in the Scarborough Marine Recovery Zone, we grow seaweed on the patented Kelpedo™ Marine Recovery System. This growing biomass absorbs carbon, drives nutrient uptake, and creates a thriving habitat for marine life. It is highly rewarding work, and it takes a capable, coordinated team to keep our offshore operations moving smoothly. We know this coast, and we are looking for proactive people to join us out on the water.

We currently have three openings based out of Scarborough:

🌊 Marine Crew Member (6-Month Contract)
We need an experienced hand for a working deck. You will bring your basic STCW safety training and Slinger and Banksman certificates, and we will put your skills to work. This is a full-time role with the potential to become a permanent position.

🌱 Trainee Marine Crew Member
This is a direct entry point into the marine industry. If you have an interest in the ocean and an eagerness to learn, you bring a positive attitude, and we will provide the hands-on training you need to build a long-term career on the water.

🔬 Ocean Science Technician
This role bridges the laboratory and the open sea to support our nature-based marine recovery work. You will conduct sampling, maintain environmental monitoring equipment, and process scientific datasets. Bring a relevant technical background and strong problem-solving skills, and you will be at the centre of our data collection.

Last week, we welcomed five Year 12 science students from Scarborough Sixth Form College to the pier for an intensive week of practical work experience.

Working to the brief "Blue Futures: Unlocking the Potential of Seaweed in a Changing Ocean," they were embedded completely across our teams. They completed biodiversity overviews with Imogen, conducted laboratory water sampling with Ana, and took on basic marine training in the harbour aboard our workboat, Bright Blue, with Jamie R.

When an authentic North Sea fog rolled in on Thursday and prevented our offshore surveys, the students showed their adaptability. We moved to the shoreline at Burniston for a session on visual data gathering, using photography to document the changing coast.

On Friday morning, they faced a daunting milestone: presenting their finished "Blue Futures" projects directly to our senior scientists, doctors, and professors. They delivered their ideas on ocean health and discussed how our Kelpedo™ Marine Recovery System actively supports local marine life.

We celebrated a successful week the traditional way, with a crew barbecue cooked by Jamie H under the Friday sun. These young scientists have bright futures ahead of them! You can read the full story of their week with us on our blog.

Meet the scientist measuring our North Sea impact.

If you have been following our work closely, you might have spotted Ana around the lab or out on Bright Blue. As our Science Officer, she sits directly between the operational reality of our offshore cultivation and the hard data.

Whether she is tracking nutrient uptake for Project SeaSwell or advocating for her favourite deep-sea corals, Ana ensures every environmental claim we make is backed by precise measurement.

The evolution of offshore wind relies on designing the North Sea, and beyond, as a shared system for energy, nature, and coastal communities.

It was a privilege to be at Global Offshore Wind hosted by RenewableUK, speaking about how nature-based marine recovery can sit alongside offshore wind as the sector scales.

We shared how SeaGrown’s Kelpedo™ marine recovery system is being developed to support biodiversity enhancement and environmental monitoring alongside offshore wind developments, turning space constraints into opportunities for multi-functional marine recovery and coexistence.

This builds on winning the 2024 global offshore wind innovation competition with RWE [seagrown.co.uk/blogs/news/seagrown-and-rwe-collaborate-to-pioneer-marine-biodiversity-enhancement], our collaboration with Ørsted on the development of practical biodiversity monitoring within operational wind farms, and our recent mNCEA publications documenting biodiversity outcomes.

We were encouraged to hear how Defra and The Crown Estate are working on new policies and approaches that place nature-positive outcomes at the heart of marine planning, leasing, and decision-making.

The North Sea is important for our future energy security. The opportunity now is to ensure it also becomes one of the most ecologically resilient marine environments, and we are excited to be a part of this.

The North Sea put on a brilliant show for our latest guests.

Over the past few weeks, we have hosted teams from the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) and Natural England, taking them out on the water to see our offshore operations firsthand.

It is one thing to look at maps and reports in an office. It is quite another to stand on the deck of a workboat and watch vessels navigate safely between our Kelpedo™ systems. The local wildlife made an appearance, too. Seals and porpoises were spotted around the site, and with more than 100 marine species now recorded using the habitat we have created, it was a powerful reminder of the biodiversity our coastline can support.

Healthy oceans require collaboration. We are incredibly grateful to the teams from the MMO and Natural England for coming out to Yorkshire and sharing our vision for the future of our seas.
