World Ocean Day 2026

Out on the water, the shift is something we observe every day. Long before we measure the data, we can see the sky above our Scarborough cultivation site growing increasingly crowded and alive with activity.

Today is World Ocean Day. For the crew aboard Bright Blue, this day perfectly captures our ongoing, active reality out in the North Sea. We continue to focus on the biology beneath the surface and the engineering that supports it. The seaweed we cultivate is actively improving local water quality by taking up excess nutrients and building a vital offshore habitat that now sustains over sixty marine species.

The marine environment is formidable, yet it is responding to what we are building. The Kelpedo™ units are anchoring a renewed food web, proving that offshore engineering and ecological recovery can run concurrently.

Happy International Seaweed Day. 🌊

Today marks the anniversary of the UN's Seaweed Manifesto, which recognises what we witness in our waters every day: seaweed is one of the most useful things in the ocean. It can help feed people, absorb carbon, and bring battered marine ecosystems roaring back to life.

Out in the North Sea, our Kelpedo™ systems grow kelp like the magnificent specimen Jamie is wrestling with here. And the wildlife has voted with its wings and fins. Around our Kelpedo™ growing units, we've recorded an eightfold rise in kittiwakes, more than 60 species making themselves at home, and porpoises and dolphins dropping by daily.

So while the rest of the world celebrates seaweed for a day, we'll be doing what we do every day. Growing it off the Yorkshire coast, by the metre.

Here's to the humble, mighty kelp. 🌱

Our offshore environmental monitoring relies entirely on the precision of our data. To ensure that precision, our science team recently returned to the chalk cliffs of RSPB Bempton Cliffs for their annual seabird identification training.

Imogen, John, Ana, and Hong Chin spent the day working alongside the RSPB team, honing the specific fieldwork skills required to monitor high-density avian populations in complex coastal environments.

This annual training is a critical component of our offshore methodology. When our crew records wildlife activity above our Scarborough cultivation site, every observation must be gathered under strict scientific conditions. By applying the same rigorous counting protocols at our marine site and a designated control site further down the coast, we can accurately measure the ecological impact of our underwater structures.

Our data confirms that creating structural habitat in the North Sea directly anchors the local food web, leading to measurable increases in seabird activity. Maintaining the training required to verify these shifts is how we keep our research robust and our science beyond question.

Taking the classroom to the Yorkshire coast.

As part of Izzy's prize for winning our 'Design a SeaTree' competition, we took the pupils of St Martin's Primary School, Scarborough to the shoreline for a coastal treasure hunt. Members of the SeaGrown Science Team, Imogen and Ana, led the group on a mission: to map the changing biodiversity across the upper, middle, and lower shores. They identified native seaweed species, observed coastal creatures up close, and did their very best to resist the temptation to touch the crabs.

We also explored the stark difference in life supported by natural rock habitats compared to man-made granite sea defences. The contrast speaks for itself.

The ocean has a way of doing its own teaching. We just open the door.

As the weather turns and the days stretch out like a long, steady swell, we have been out on the water aboard Bright Blue several times this week. The North Sea is feeling particularly vibrant right now, and the shift in the season certainly makes for a much more pleasant experience!

Our marine crew has taken full advantage of the returning sun to monitor our offshore cultivation. Beneath the surface, the seaweed is growing steadily across the Kelpedo™ units. It takes a unified effort to keep operations moving in this formidable environment, and every unit we deploy is another step toward creating vital habitat and fostering cleaner seas.

A dignified exit for a true veteran of the sea. The departure of the MV Southern Star is a bittersweet moment, but her physical journey has reached its absolute end. She may be gone from Scarborough Harbour to be respectfully dismantled, but her impact on our community is permanent.

A huge thank you to Colin, Thamescraft, and the professional crew of the MTS Valour for handling her final voyage to Hull so flawlessly, alongside the Maritime and Coastguard Agency for ensuring a safe and compliant operation. It is deeply reassuring to know she was in such capable hands.

We look back on her time with us not with mixed feelings, but with profound pride. Her departure marks a triumphant milestone for SeaGrown, making way as we update our fleet and vigorously propel our mission forward to cultivate thriving marine biodiversity.

We firmly believe that the rigorous science of ocean restoration must be met with the joyful experience of our coastal community. Between 2020 and 2024, the Southern Star became exactly that bridge.

In a single year (2024), she welcomed over 10,000 visitors aboard, while an estimated 80,000 people engaged with our maritime mission simply by reading her information boards from the pier. She provided a space where the formidable reality of the North Sea met the warmth of our local community—a place to share the tactile beauty and savoury depth of our marine harvest.

While MV Southern Star's upper decks welcomed the community, the rest of the ship was dedicated entirely to rigorous marine science.

Upon her arrival in Scarborough, her lower decks were transformed into our dedicated onboard science laboratories, while her aft deck proudly hosted our seaweed hatchery within a specialised, refrigerated unit. Across this steel sanctuary, our scientific team meticulously nurtured the delicate spores that would eventually be deployed into the formidable North Sea on our Kelpedo™ systems. She was not merely a vessel; she was the literal birthplace of our offshore ecosystems, allowing us to turn the raw potential of our coastline into a rigorous, habitat-building reality.
