🌿 Have You Ever Walked Somewhere That Just Felt Different?

A hill you couldn’t stop looking at.
A stretch of water that seemed strangely still.
An old woodland where the atmosphere somehow changed…

For people in the past, places like these weren’t always considered simply beautiful landscapes.

In Scottish folklore and historical traditions, hills, lochs, springs, rivers and even boundaries between one place and another could have supernatural significance.

Some places became associated with fairies or spirits. Certain journeys were made sunwise — following the direction of the sun — while particular waters, hills and natural features became connected with customs, stories and offerings.

The landscape wasn’t just the background to folklore.

It was part of it. 🌿

And traditions like these always make me wonder about the places we know today.

Ancient stones, lonely hills, hidden woodland, old pathways, rivers, coastlines… sometimes a place simply has an atmosphere that’s difficult to explain.

🌙 An Enchanted Whisper After Dark

The Thimble Beneath the Ferns

A woman walking through a Cumbrian wood found a tiny brass thimble hidden beneath the ferns.

She slipped it into her pocket and continued home.

That night, the torn cuff of her coat was mysteriously mended with perfect purple stitches.

The following morning, she returned the thimble—along with a length of purple thread.

By dusk, both had vanished.

But every fern beside the path had been neatly hemmed. 🌿😂

Demdike’s Jar has found its place… beneath a dome, surrounded by woodland moss and dried flowers. 🌿💜

Inspired by the history and folklore of Pendle, each jar is handmade and finished with its own wax seal, intention card and a tiny key charm.

🌿 Why Did People Say Flax Had to “Suffer”?

Flax looks rather innocent — delicate stems topped with tiny blue flowers.

But hidden behind this little plant is a surprisingly dark piece of European folklore. 👀

For centuries, flax was grown to make linen. But turning a plant into beautiful cloth wasn’t gentle.

It was pulled from the earth, soaked until the stems began to break down, dried, beaten, broken and combed before its fibres could finally be spun into thread.

And people noticed the similarity to something else…

A rather terrible ordeal. 😂

Folktales, riddles and old songs began describing flax almost as though it were a living character being put through a series of punishments — sometimes known as the “passion” or suffering of the flax.

Yet after everything it endured, the humble plant emerged transformed into linen.

I love finding little pieces of folklore like this because they show how our ancestors turned even ordinary jobs and plants into stories.

🌿 If plants could talk, which one do you think would have the best story to tell?

I’m fairly certain the flax would have a few complaints. 😂
