On my bike rides through the local woods recently, I have been witnessing the Bluebells coming into flower. I think I probably say this every year but this year they just seem to be even more intense.
On the weekend I decided to get Mum in the car and drive as close as possible to the spot in the photograph. We had to walk a few hundred yards, which took Mum a while, however her reaction was worth every step.
She did recognise the location, once I reminded her that we use to walk through this patch quite regularly as a family back in the day. “Oh my word” were her exact words, as she wobbled along the uneven forest path holding onto my arm with a vice like grip!
As we strolled along taking in the spectacle, I could feel a strong connection to her and the past, a kind of unspoken understanding between us which transcended the years and her memory challenges. I realised that this was an experience that her dementia couldn’t challenge, that she was, for a moment, free and present without question.
Thank you Bluebells. I think that this is the power of familiar images. They can bring people living with memory related issues to transcend their affliction, even if it is for just a short time. I can’t imagine a jigsaw puzzle of just Bluebells, that would be a big challenge.
