We're so excited to welcome Kemide Lawson to Sevenoaks Bookshop for an event in conversation with bookshop owner Fleur, to celebrate Kemide's new book 'House Proud'! ๐Ÿ“š๐ŸŽŸ

For too long, Black-designed homes have been omitted from discussions about influential architecture and interior design. With House Proud, writer and curator Kemide Lawson sets the record straight.

๐Ÿ—“ Date: Thursday 17 September
๐Ÿ•– Time: 7pm
๐Ÿ“Venue: Sevenoaks Bookshop
๐ŸŽŸ Tickets: ยฃ12

*Books will be available to buy on the night to be signed by Kemide, and will be sold at a special price just for the event!*

House Proud
In House Proud, Kemide brings into view homes from across the globe - ranging from the pre-historic to the contemporary - in a stunning collection of Black design.

Richly illustrated with archival and contemporary images, the book serves as both an inspirational resource for homeowners, architects and designers, and an important visual compendium of some of the world's most beautiful - and overlooked - homes.

Kemide Lawson
Kemide Lawson is a writer and cultural thinker of Nigerian and Jamaican heritage. Her work explores African and African-diaspora homes across time and place, celebrating what she describes as 'ancestral intelligence' - the creativity, technology and spiritual knowledge embedded in how Black people have historically made home - and how these principles can be applied to modern day life.

She is the founder of Cottage Noir, a visual platform dedicated to Black homes of the past and present, and the creator of Afri-tectural Digest, her Substack publication exploring Black history and culture through the lens of the home.

Lawson has curated an installation for the Museum of the Home, written for magazines including Livingetc and Harper's Bazaar, and consulted for agencies including Stylus and Selfgood on future trends and cultural identity.

The Housekeeper
A dramatic story of forbidden love, from enduring bestseller Rose Tremain.

Mrs Danowski - known as Danni - is the housekeeper of a grand masnion on the wild coast of Cornwall. When glamorous young writer Daphne du Maurier visits Manderville Hall to research her new novel, she and Danni are drawn into a clandestine and intoxicating affair.

For Danni, it is an all-consuming love; for Daphne a submission to long-suppressed desires. But their fragile secret is vulnerable to prying eyes and destined for heartbreak. When Daphne's novel launches to triumphant success, Danni is distraught to find herself transformed into a malign and jealous character on the page. She seeks respite from the hurt by telling her own story: The Housekeeper.

What unforeseen encounters, what forbidden feelings can inspire a writer? With flair and panache, Rose Tremain has invented the story of how a great novel of the past came into being and in turn creates a masterwork of her own.

Rose Tremain
Rose Tremain's novels and short stories have been published in thirty countries and have won many awards.

The Housekeeper is currently in production as a major film, directed by Richard Eyre, with script by Tremain, and starring Anthony Hopkins and Helena Bonham Carter.

Rose Tremain was made a CBE in 2007 and a Dame in 2020. She lives in Norfolk and London with the biographer, Richard Holmes.

Redwood
Redwood is the story of how at the height of the Cold War, one mysterious double agent, whose intelligence reached the highest levels of British and American governments, cracked open the KGB, revealed the Kremlinโ€™s secret plot and prevented Armageddon.

This is the gripping tale of one manโ€™s courage, and its extraordinary unintended consequences that still shape our world today. Itโ€™s about a moving friendship between spies on opposite sides of the global conflict; about marriage, loyalty, betrayal and sexual dysfunction; and about how decisions made in secret can have huge, long-term ramifications.

Drawing on never-before-seen material from archives in multiple countries, and interviews with the participants including officers from MI6 and MI5, the KGB and CIA, Redwood combines the shadowy world of the Spy and the Traitor with the action of SAS: Rogue Heroes. It lifts the lid on an unknown and highly significant Cold War victory, on the machinations of history's Great Game, and on how espionage really works.

Without Redwood, our world would be very different โ€“ and might not exist at all.

Ben Macintyre
Ben Macintyre is the multimillion-copy bestselling author. He is a columnist and Associate Editor at The Times, and has worked as the newspaperโ€™s correspondent in New York, Paris and Washington. His books have sold more than 6.5 million copies across all editions around the world.

Original Flava: Easy Caribbean
Get authentic Caribbean flavours on your table in no time at all! In this brand new book, brothers Shaun and Craig McAnuff bring feel-good flava to your table in 80 mouth-watering Caribbean recipes, all made simple and convenient but without compromising on traditional flava. This is Caribbean food cooked in an easy way.

This is Caribbean food that's easier to fit into your life: big flava with little fuss.

Craig and Shaun McAnuff
Craig and Shaun McAnuff, raised in London and of Jamaican descent, are bringing Caribbean food to the masses. In April 2016, they launched the Original Flava brand, sharing videos of them cooking simple Caribbean recipes. Their videos went viral and within a month they had garnered 70k followers and had been interviewed on TV.

Since then, the brothers have been featured on the BBC, Sunday Brunch, Buzzfeed, BET Network, London Live and Reprezent Radio, they have sold out supper clubs and appeared at food festivals around the UK, and often go in to schools to inspire the next generation.

They self-published their first cookbook Caribbean Cookbook in 2017, and published two more with Bloomsbury - Original Flava in 2019 and Natural Flava in 2022. Original Flava, Easy Caribbean is their fourth book.
