Autumn's already on the way, and as the holiday season ends, there’s that particular urge to start fresh. To be ready for a new school term, college, or simply get back to work.

We've always thought a good study or work space deserves more than the basics. We've drawn together favourite Japanese stationery essentials and pieces to help make working less of a chore, more of a pleasure.

A small change to our week.

NiMi Projects on Bank Street will be closed tomorrow, Wednesday 19 August. We’ll be back open as usual on Thursday 20 August, ready to welcome you in.

Who would have thought that mosquito netting would become one of our favourite Japanese textiles? It’s so simple, so lightweight and yet so versatile.

When layered, the first thing you notice is the texture — its airiness. Gauze, woven so fine it traps air to become cloud-like fluffy when softened by washing.

Handwoven in Nara using a mosquito-netting technique with centuries behind it, the Ban Inoue Organic Caya Kitchen Cloth is kept as nature made it — no bleach, no chemical processing, nothing added. You may spot the odd dark fleck in the weave here and there. That's just raw cotton being raw cotton, and we think it's part of what makes each piece feel a little more honest.

Its lightness is exactly why it earns its keep in so many ways. Use it to dry your dishes, strain your stock, cover foods or wrap up a warm loaf. Drape it over your shoulder while you cook, or even knot it and wear it as a neckerchief. However you use it, it just works.

Simple, useful, and made with real care — everything we love in a good kitchen cloth.

Summer tends to be a little quieter as locals head off on holidays, so we’ll be changing our hours in August slightly to adjust.

Monday Closed
Tuesday - Saturday 10am - 5pm
Sunday Closed

Japan is around 70–80% mountains. It's no wonder that its peaks have been shaping the country's art for centuries.

For Yama no Hi (Mountain Day) on 11 August, we've added a new section to our Mountain Day journal. Peaks on Paper gives a little insight into how Mount Fuji went from sacred pilgrimage site to a favourite subject in woodblock prints, textiles and even sento bathhouse walls.

Mount Fuji is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but not for its nature. It's listed as a cultural site — a “Source of Artistic Inspiration” — with Hokusai's famous prints of 36 views named directly. That same silhouette still turns up in design today, including our Saiko Design washi lampshades, handmade using techniques over 1,300 years old.

We think some things are worth the wait.

Crafted from a single piece of Shimanto Hinoki — Japanese cypress harvested through responsible forest-thinning — one of Japan's most remarkable materials — our exclusive NiMi Projects Hinoki Chopping board is now being prepped for your kitchen.

The fine, close grain of hinoki is naturally soft on knife edges, and its high concentration of phytoncides and essential oils give it built-in antibacterial and mould-resistant properties. No treatments, no additives — just the wood's own quiet defences, and a faint, calming citrus-woody scent.

We debuted these boards at our Kataba Knife popup recently, and the requests for them haven't stopped since. So we've opened them up for pre-order, in two sizes, ahead of their official arrival at the end of August.

In Japan, one everyday word for ceramics is "setomono" — meaning "a Seto thing," named after Seto in Aichi, one of the country's oldest pottery towns.

We love how the Drop Mug — designed by Angle in Seto — purposely gives way to the serendipity of hand-crafted, "happy accidents" An extra-thick glaze is hand-applied to the stoneware, and from there, gravity and the kiln take over. Glaze cascades down the sides as it fires, settling wherever heat, time and the mug's position in the kiln decide it should.
A little traditional, a little rustic and yet still contemporary in design. No two mugs come out the same.

Now at NiMi Projects and in three warm tones — white, beige and brown — each one genuinely one-of-a-kind.

There's a reason roughly half of all the ceramic tableware in Japan comes from one region.

Mino-Yaki — pottery from the mountains of Gifu Prefecture — has been fired, glazed, and refined for over 1,500 years. It gave Japan its first white glaze, its most daring tea bowls, and now produces some of the most beautiful and varied tableware in the world.
