☀️ SUNCREAM ☀️
We all know the importance of protecting your skin against sunburn and skin cancer, but how much do you think about the suncream you use?
Suncream is absorbed into our skin every time we apply it (which if you burn like me, is a lot!) which means we’re absorbing all the things that suncream is made from, including chemicals that could potentially be harmful 😥
When you swim or shower with suncream on, chemicals like oxybenzone run into the water of the ocean either directly or through the drains. These substances are part of land pollution which, alongside industrial fishing and climate change, harm many sea creatures, algae, and coral.
Coral play a huge number of important roles including buffering shorelines, increasing biodiversity, and supporting the tourism industry in many countries 🤿 Protecting our oceans is crucial in the fight for climate justice, from the humans relying on the ocean economy to the algae removing CO2 from the atmosphere, there are millions of reasons to look after it 🌊
So here is one easy thing YOU can do - find a great suncream! Here are some tips:
🍦 Check for and avoid the chemicals listed at the bottom of this post (this is what harms aquatic life)
🍦 Try buying a natural product so your skin isn’t absorbing potentially dangerous toxins
🍦 Choose high SPF and sit in the shade to protect your skin during the strongest UV hours (10am - 2pm)
🍦 Boycott the ugly bottles and opt for plastic-free wherever possible
🍦 Support small businesses and your local economy
