βœ¨πŸ“š Reminder - Closed Next Week - and Thank You! βœ¨πŸ“š

A reminder that we are now shut for our summer holidays until Wednesday 19th August ⛱️

Whilst Sophie, Dave and the shop have a little refresh, what better time to take stock and say thank you for a wonderful year so far! πŸ™ŒπŸ»

We've had bookclubs, storytimes and author events galore, we've sold books for Harry Baker's tour, we've popped up at schools and nurseries and had several visit us for World Book Day.

We put on Sheffield's first Independent Book Festival with oir fellow Sheffield Indie bookstores and have hosted our first Beer and Wine book pairing evenings with our friends The Pangolin: craft beer and a big bookshop quiz with our friends the Beer House Hillsborougthe Beer House Hillsborough inside Tramlines festival for three days...

And to top it all off, we won Sheffield's Best Independent Retailer at the Exposed Awards in May! πŸŽ‰

However, there is still over a third of the year to go, so look forward to plenty more of the above as we race towards the madness of Christmas and we look forward to plenty more chats about all things books! πŸ“š

See you in 10 days! ✨

πŸ¦– 🐌 Choose Your Own Evolution - Jules Howard πŸ¦–πŸŒ

A choose your own adventure with an educational twist, perfect for curious readers aged 7-12!

Every animal on Earth is the product of an evolutionary journey, beginning with the simplest of slimy ancestors living in oceans over 400 million years ago and branching out into the range of complex life forms we see today.

This unique book engages its readers with the science by allowing them to actively choose their own evolutionary pathway.

Starting out as a humble, bacteria-eating blob, you must select the characteristics you would like to develop in response to pressures from the environment, with each choice leading to a different page.

Will you develop feet and venture onto land, or flippers to master the seas? If you are threatened, will you become a giant predator, or stay small and hidden away?

Try out all these evolutionary pathways, and many more, to learn about some amazing creatures and the adaptations they evolved over millions of years.

β›©οΈπŸ“š Dinner at the Night Library - Hika Harada β›©οΈπŸ“š

The Night Library is no ordinary library.

Within it are found the rarest and most unusual collections – the books of deceased famous writers:

the books they wrote;
the books that inspired them;
the books they loved.

All Otaha Higuchi wants to do is work with books. However, the exhausting nature of her work at a chain bookstore, combined with her paltry salary and irritating manager quickly bring reality crashing down around her. She is on the verge of quitting when she receives a message from somebody anonymous, inviting her to apply for a job at β€˜"The Night Library." The hours are from seven o’clock to midnight. The library exclusively stores books by deceased authors, and none of them can be checked out – instead, they’re put on public display to be revered and celebrated by the library’s visitors, making it akin to a book museum.

There, Otoha meets the other staff, a group of likeminded literary misfits, including a legendary chef who prepares incredible meals for the library’s employees at the end of each day. Night after night, she bonds with her colleagues over meals in the cafΓ©, each of which are inspired by the literature on the shelves.

But as strange occurrences start happening around the library that may bring the threat of its closure, Otaha and her friends fear that the peace they have found there will forever be lost to them. Will their faith in the value of books strong enough to save it? And what will remain if it isn’t?

πŸŽͺ Tramlines Round-up πŸŽͺ

All of the feels making this video rounding up another brilliant year at Tramlines.

Grateful to for showcasing small local businesses in in front of thousands, and supporting the local indies for what is such a big weekend for Hillsborough. Always a joy to be with ✨️

Glorious to be stocking and representing other small makers and small, female founded businesses, including , and not forgetting being able to champion - what a privilege ✨️

Super proud and appreciative of my brilliant bookshop team who come together each year to make it as seamless as possible for me to manage, both in the run up getting things ready behind the scenes, and over the weekend itself, both in and out of the shop - especially helpful this year when my brain has been a little pickled to say the least (the most non-mat-leave-mat-leave feels!) ✨️

The biggest shout out goes to the 8 month old party animal, who brought all the smiles, dancing, and good vibes (oh, and my husband who sailed the parenting ship for the weekend✌🏻)

Same again next year?! πŸ‘€

πŸŸ πŸš‡ Men in Love - Irvine Welsh πŸŸ πŸš‡

Irvine Welsh's long anticipated follow up to the culture defining Trainspotting...

It's the late 1980s. Separated after a drug deal gone wrong, Renton, Sick Boy, Spud and Begbie each want to feel alive. They fill their days with s*x and romance and trying to get ahead; they follow the call of the dance floor, with its promise of joy and redemption.

Sick Boy begins an intense relationship with Amanda – rich, connected, his β€˜princess’. When the pair set a date for their wedding, he sees a chance for his generation to take control at last.

But as the 1990s dawn, will finding love be the answer to the group’s dreams or just another doomed quest?

πŸπŸ¦‹ Buzz Illustrator Workshop πŸ¦‹πŸ

Join us in the bookshop on Wednesday 19th August at 4pm for an incredibly exciting Illustrator event with Sara Boccaccini Meadows! Hear an introduction to her new book, Buzz, then take part in a short illustrator workshop, followed by a craft activity. You can also see our newly designed window and get a copy of the book signed. We are buzzing about it! 🐝

You may recognise Sara, who joined us last summer to celebrate the publication of Wild from the popular 'In Our Nature' series. She is a print designer and illustrator currently living in Brooklyn, NY, originally from the rolling hills of the Peak District.

She takes inspiration from nature and the tiny details in everyday life to create unique and quirky print illustrations. From glowing insects to masters of camouflage, Buzz is a fascinating look at the tiny creatures that will completely change the way kids see the world beneath their feet. If you have a nature-loving kid (or want to inspire one), this is a must-have for your shelf, and the event will be perfect for children aged 4+!

Tickets and further details available on the website ✨️
