Less than a month to the inaugural Felixstowe Classical Guitar Festival! As well as a great line-up of players, there is a composition competition hosted by Steve Goss and a luthier competition (hosted by myself). The luthier competition is open to amateurs, professionals and students this year, so there's no excuse not to enter, and it's an excellent opportunity particularly for students and amateurs to get some valuable feedback from professional players and luthiers.

Had a great time at the Classical Guitar Retreat in St Andrews last week. Normally I'm there to exhibit my guitars, and maybe give a talk, but this year I had decided to participate in the course as a player. I'm very glad I did, and enjoyed the lessons, ensemble playing and concerts very much. I didn't take many pictures, but here's one of one of the "small" ensembles playing in the final night's participants concert, and one of the guitar I made for the 1st prize of the senior competition.

Congratulations to all the finalists of the competition, and in particular the winner Elsa Canessa.

Thanks as always to Matthew McAllister and his team for running such a great event.

When cleating a crack it's important that the area where the cleat is to be glued is clean. I this case, the cleat needed to be placed close to the far end of the soundboard - very difficult to reach. Here's a little trick I've recently started using. A small piece of flat hardwood with abrasive paper fixed to one side with double-sided tape. Magnets fixed to the other side, and off you go...
