Fork handles or four candles , that is the question !!

This is an absolute belter of a sketch — hysterically funny and rightly considered one of the best in British comedy.

On 18 September 1976, Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett performed Four Candles on The Two Ronnies, with Barker playing a customer arriving at a hardware shop with a shopping list and Corbett as the increasingly frustrated shopkeeper trying to work out what he actually wants.

The first request sounds like “four candles”, but after Corbett produces them, Barker explains that he actually wants “fork handles” — handles for forks. And from there, the misunderstandings just keep coming.

Ronnie Barker wrote the sketch himself under his writing pseudonym Gerald Wiley. Interestingly, his original handwritten script wasn’t even titled Four Candles — it was called Annie Finkhouse.

That original script later appeared on Antiques Roadshow, where Ronnie Corbett helped confirm Barker’s handwriting, and it subsequently sold at auction for an incredible £48,500.

There was also a lovely tribute to the sketch following Ronnie Barker’s death. At his memorial service in Westminster Abbey, four candles accompanied the cross up the aisle rather than the usual two.

Even 50 years later, simply saying “four candles” or “fork handles” is enough for millions of comedy fans to know exactly what you mean.

£9,837 raised by 60 surfboards... and £4,000 heading to local charities ❤️

The final total is in following this year’s Cromer Crab & Lobster Festival Grand Surfboard Auction.

Festival chairman Tony Shipp MBE has confirmed that the 60 individually decorated surfboards raised an impressive £9,837, with bids ranging from £20 to £1,400.

And there’s more good news for the community. £4,000 from the proceeds will be distributed to local charities later this year.

Tony was also keen to emphasise something that perhaps sums up the spirit of the event rather nicely. While one surfboard attracted the highest bid of the day, every board and every artist who contributed played their part in achieving that final total.
