Join us for our third annual Booker Prize Short List Social at Palate

Every year we get together at Palate to talk about the shortlisted books we’ve read. Some people read them all, some people read one, there’s no pressure, this is a social event where we tell each other why we loved, or indeed hated the books we’ve read. We try and convince each other to read our favorites and almost every time we host this event we have chosen the wrong winner. It’s all a bit of cosy, candlelit bookish fun.

The 2026 Booker Prize shortlist will be announced on Tuesday, 22 September 2026. You can choose any of the shortlisted books and your ticket includes a drink, beer, wine or a soft drink.

Michael has had a big life. A life of abundance and applause. But now he’s dead (or at least he’s pretty sure he is.) He is given the chance to return - but it comes with a catch. He ends up back in a time he’d tried to forget.

He and his mum have been forced to start again after his dad’s death: new house, new school, no mates. Worse still, his mum has a new boyfriend, a man with suspiciously close-set eyes and the word DRYWALL tattooed on his forearm. Michael
mostly spends his time in his bedroom, drawing cars and making airfix models. Things seem hopeless.

But as the months pass, Michael slowly begins to find his place. Helped by new friendships and the unexpected kindness of his neighbour, Mr Graham, what starts as the worst year of Michael’s life might actually turn out to be the one that makes him. Life looks different second time around.

A wise, funny and moving novel about growing up and finding your way, from multimillion-copy bestselling author Bob Mortimer.

We try not to read the same books as each other so we can cover more ground but sometimes a book is so good we force it into each other’s hands. And then we argue over who gets to put them on their Favourites Shelf.

Calling the Chapter Chasers Crew and all graphic novel fans! We’re back for another Comic Club session with our local graphic novel fan, Illustrator Amy! We LOVED our last session where we learned how to make our own zines. This time we’ll be cracking out the good pens and creating our own Donut Squad inspired characters. Bring your imagination and we’ll bring the rest! Totally free to attend, just email [email protected] to book your space.

We had a little break but ‘Bookshop Breakfast Social’ is back for Autumn. 🍂

Swipe 🫱 for our October read…

A Sunday morning gathering at Chapter 34 — we know you love events at the shop, we know you love a good book and a chat, so what’s better than a morning combining all of that with a giant dollop of great company?

We will share a fiction title to spark a relaxed, friendly conversation over breakfast. This is not a structured book group, it’s just an opportunity to talk about the book of the month in a relaxed manner. If you loved it or hated it, others will want to know why. We might even mark it out of 10, or maybe we won’t, let’s see how it goes.

What can I say? Sophie will have a place in my heart forever more. Having loved Sorrow & Bliss by Meg Mason I was nervous to open my proof but she’s done it again. This is a story of loneliness and hope. It made me laugh, cringe and left me wanting to scoop Sophie up and tell her things will get better. ❤️‍🩹

Our customers love a recommendation and not just for new releases. We each have a shelf full of our favourites, books that we have fallen for, ones which made us cry, chuckle, and question our own opinions. Some of them are bestsellers, some have slipped under the radar but they are all 5/5s!

wrote ‘The Herd’ during the pandemic, she bravely tackles the divisive topic of childhood vaccinations through a lens of female friendship. I won’t say anymore, just read it. It’s fab.
