Is this just me? I usually forge a second 'just in case' piece for any commission, or just as spares for stock.

I also usually put them to one side in the 'to be finished' bin!

Anyway, today was the day. Haul them out, rough grind, heat treat, second grind and start thinking about handles.

New hand stitched leather sheaths (with removable, thermo-moulded liners) for two hunters and a bone saw.

Commercial culling requires hygienic and washable sheath liners, but the client wanted to retain the aesthetic of leather. The best of both worlds, now with their new owner.

The Marlow Warlord, a C6th King's grave, also featured a small personal iron knife, probably held in a pouch with his fire steel and personal grooming items.

The blade is just over 2", and the boxwood handle while speculative (as there no remaining evidence in the grave), it is plausible.

I was invited by Rod Hughes to collaborate on a project for Brett Thorn of to make a reconstruction of The Marlow Warlord Sword.

This is the outcome. I was involved mainly with the blade construction, with Rod dealing with the beautiful horn handle and other components and sheath mounts, with WoolleyMama making the excellent scabbard.

More to come!

Please visit the museum to see a wonderful immersive anglo-saxon exhibition.
