The wooden heart :
While sitting with Hari on the final day before his passing in February, a chaplain came to see me. She spoke quietly, not of hope or miracles—there was no point by then—but of courage, of guidance. She asked if I would like a small heart and a cross, both carved from olive wood. I said yes. She placed the heart in my hand and then in Hari’s, clasping our hands together. The cross went into Hari’s other hand. And like that, we sat for hours & hours, myself, his brothers, all of us holding on, as time slipped away, until the darkness finally came.
Later, I found out that the heart and cross were made in Crete. I ordered more—one for each of his brothers and close family members—and had them engraved. I took them to be with Hari straight away and stayed with Him until his funeral, except the original heart, which I kept with me. On the day we laid him to rest, his brothers carried theirs in their pockets. The wooden cross remained with Hari.
In May, I went to Crete and found the man who made them. I thanked him. I told him everything. He was deeply moved.
Since then, the hearts have been traveling the world - Everest base camp. Crete. Cape Verde. Germany. Carried in pockets, tucked into bags.
wherever we go in the world we will take that heart with us. Always and forever 💔
