Skegness Pier Angling Club fished their latest match at Chapel Six Marshes on Sunday. The Roy Parker memorial Cup is held every year in honour of Roy who was a well-respected member of the club and excellent angler who fishing with and supported the club over many years. Fifteen anglers fished the match in bright, sunny conditions with a light North wind and a large swell rolling in from the northeast, this was the remnants of the rough up mid- week which deterred many hounds from feeding in close. As a result, many anglers came who had prepared to target hounds soon switched tactics to lighter multi-hook rigs and fished for bass, flounders and eels.
First place went to Paul Marshall, who won the match with four flounders measuring a total of 115 cm. Paul initially targeted hounds at long range, but after getting no bites he switched to a three-hook clipped-down rig baited with marsh worm he had dug from the Wash the previous day. The change quickly paid off, producing a double shot on his second cast at range. He continued with this approach for the rest of the match, only switching back to a hound cast near the end after seeing Gary land a smooth hound in the final half hour.
In second place with 113cm was Adie Cooper who started off after hounds but had to switch over to target anything after two fruitless casts. Adie alternated distances and rig type from clipped downs to long flowing traces in close to tempt four flounders using lugworm and fish tipped with maddies as bait, including a 36cm flounder winning him longest flatfish prize too.
Dave Shorthouse came in third with three flounders for 88cm, caught using his continental style outfit and fresh worm bait.
Gary Hutson finished fourth with one fish measuring 81 cm. He began by targeting hounds, then switched to lighter tactics without success before returning to hound fishing in the final hour in a last attempt to avoid a blank. Using old peeler crab at long range, he waited it out, and in the last twenty minutes his rod bent over as he connected with an 81 cm fish, which also earned him the longest round fish prize.
Flounders were spread evenly along the match stretch, with several good specimens measuring between 34 cm and 36 cm. Mark Bradbury took fifth place with two flounders, while Karl Nangle finished sixth with two flounders and a turbot. Tracey Cooper Adams marked her return to match fishing after a long recovery from her recent operation with two flounders and seventh place. On such a hard day it was good to see everyone catch at least one or two flounders each, apart from one angler who blanked.
