It's National Potato Day, and we're already looking ahead to Christmas πŸ₯”

Cold-stored seed potatoes arrive in August, ready for late summer planting. Pop them into a grow bag or container, keep them protected in a frost-free greenhouse, watch the foliage develop through the autumn, then brush back the compost in December to uncover fresh new potatoes for the Christmas table.

Fresh potatoes on the Christmas table? We'd call that worth the wait.

Do you already grow your own potatoes for Christmas, or is this the year you'll give it a try?

Spot a gap in the greenhouse in August and it’s very hard not to fill it. 🌱

A finished crop or newly cleared pot can open up space for another harvest, and there’s still plenty worth sowing for the weeks ahead.

Salad leaves, spinach, pak choi, baby carrots and even mizuna can all keep the greenhouse productive as summer begins its march towards autumn.

But perhaps August isn’t about starting something new for you. Has this been your year for cucurbits, with cucumbers still cropping and pumpkins or winter squash growing towards an autumn harvest? Maybe you’re already thinking about the crops you’ll be curing and storing away for winter.

So, what’s taking your attention this August: sowing, harvesting, or growing something for the months ahead?

πŸŒ§οΈπŸ’š Rain is finally on the way... let's make every drop count! πŸ’šπŸŒ§οΈ

After weeks of sunshine, soaring temperatures and dry conditions, it looks like many parts of the UK could finally be seeing some much-needed rain this weekend. The Met Office is forecasting a cooler spell with outbreaks of rain moving across the country, bringing welcome relief for gardens and water supplies alike.

If you've been battling the heat, worrying about hosepipe restrictions or watching your water butt run dry, now is the perfect time to prepare.

🌧️ Position your water butts ready to collect as much rainwater as possible.
πŸ’§ Check your downpipes and connectors are clear.
🌱 Top up your reserves while nature does the hard work!

Collected rainwater is one of the best resources for your garden. Not only does it help reduce your reliance on mains water, but it's also ideal for watering greenhouse plants, vegetables, flowers, pots and containers.

At Greenhouse Sensation, we have everything you need to make the most of the weather, including:

πŸ’§ Water Butts and our new Drip Watering Kits
🚿 Watering Cans
πŸ”— Connectors and Accessories
🌿 Water-saving solutions for every garden

Whether we're in the middle of a heatwave or enjoying a rainy weekend, being prepared means your garden can thrive whatever the British weather decides to do next!

πŸŒžπŸ’§ No rain for weeks... how is your water supply holding up? πŸ’§πŸŒ±

With hosepipe bans now in force across parts of the UK and many gardeners facing prolonged dry conditions, every drop of water has become more precious than ever. Recent reports show parts of the UK have experienced weeks with little to no significant rainfall, while restrictions on hosepipe use continue to expand as water companies try to protect supplies.

For those of us who love growing our own, it can be a worrying time. Tomatoes, cucumbers, chillies and other greenhouse crops still need regular watering, even when we're trying to use less mains water.

That's why collecting rainwater whenever you can and using it efficiently has never been more important.

πŸ’§ Our Click & Drip Water Butt Grow Bag Kit with Timer is designed to help you make the most of every litre of stored rainwater.

Instead of watering with a hose or watering can, the system slowly delivers water directly to the roots of your plants, exactly where it's needed most.

🌿 Why gardeners love it:

βœ… Connects directly to your water butt
⏰ Includes a programmable timer for automatic watering
πŸ… Perfect for grow bags, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and more
πŸ’§ Reduces water waste by watering at the roots
🌱 Helps maintain consistent soil moisture
🏑 Ideal during hot weather, holidays and hosepipe restrictions

Using collected rainwater with a drip irrigation system is one of the smartest ways to keep your greenhouse productive while being kinder to the environment and your water supply.

🌞πŸ₯΅ The heatwave is here... and for many gardeners, so are the hosepipe bans. πŸ’§πŸŒΏ

Across parts of the UK, prolonged dry weather and soaring temperatures are putting pressure on water supplies, with hosepipe restrictions already in place in some areas and more expected if the dry spell continues.

But that doesn't mean your garden has to suffer.

A few simple changes can help your plants stay healthy while making every drop of water count:

πŸ’§ Water early in the morning or later in the evening to reduce evaporation.
🌱 Water deeply at the roots rather than little and often on the leaves.
πŸ‚ Add mulch around your plants to help lock moisture into the soil.
🌧️ Use collected rainwater wherever possible from a water butt.
πŸͺ΄ Group pots and containers together to help reduce moisture loss.
🌿 Remove any weeds that compete with your plants for valuable water.

Greenhouses can become incredibly hot during a heatwave too, so don't forget to:
β˜€οΈ Open vents and doors for maximum airflow.
🌬️ Use shading where possible to protect delicate plants.
πŸ’¦ Check pots and grow bags regularly, as they can dry out surprisingly quickly.

At Greenhouse Sensation, we're passionate about helping gardeners grow more while using water wisely. Whether you're collecting rainwater, using drip irrigation, or simply looking for smarter ways to care for your plants, a little planning can make a big difference during periods of hot, dry weather.

Remember, a stressed plant isn't always a thirsty plant. Check the soil before watering, water efficiently, and focus on keeping the roots healthy rather than soaking the foliage.

How are your plants coping with the heat? 🌑️

Have you introduced any water-saving tips into your garden this summer? We'd love to hear your advice and experiences in the comments below! πŸ‘‡πŸ’š
