ππ₯΅ The heatwave is here... and for many gardeners, so are the hosepipe bans. π§πΏ
Across parts of the UK, prolonged dry weather and soaring temperatures are putting pressure on water supplies, with hosepipe restrictions already in place in some areas and more expected if the dry spell continues.
But that doesn't mean your garden has to suffer.
A few simple changes can help your plants stay healthy while making every drop of water count:
π§ Water early in the morning or later in the evening to reduce evaporation.
π± Water deeply at the roots rather than little and often on the leaves.
π Add mulch around your plants to help lock moisture into the soil.
π§οΈ Use collected rainwater wherever possible from a water butt.
πͺ΄ Group pots and containers together to help reduce moisture loss.
πΏ Remove any weeds that compete with your plants for valuable water.
Greenhouses can become incredibly hot during a heatwave too, so don't forget to:
βοΈ Open vents and doors for maximum airflow.
π¬οΈ Use shading where possible to protect delicate plants.
π¦ Check pots and grow bags regularly, as they can dry out surprisingly quickly.
At Greenhouse Sensation, we're passionate about helping gardeners grow more while using water wisely. Whether you're collecting rainwater, using drip irrigation, or simply looking for smarter ways to care for your plants, a little planning can make a big difference during periods of hot, dry weather.
Remember, a stressed plant isn't always a thirsty plant. Check the soil before watering, water efficiently, and focus on keeping the roots healthy rather than soaking the foliage.
How are your plants coping with the heat? π‘οΈ
