The next phase of greengrocery in our 100 years was the arrival of Howard France and his family in 2004. Howard refurbished the interior of the shop, introduced new product ranges including Suma Wholefoods and during his tenure relaunched it as "The Artichoke". He was also the person who recruited Carol and introduced her to the trade of greengrocery.
We were delighted to meet Howard and his family in December and then to welcome him, Sara and Vicky back to see the shop just recently on their visit from Germany.
Thank you Howard for running with the baton from 2004 to 2009 and keeping greengrocery in Slaithwaite for the next generation.

100 years of Greengrocery.
When Arthur Daker retired, Glyn and Diane Baines bought the shop and ran the business, still using the legendary Daker name, from 1997 until 2004. Diane already had greengrocery experience and loved the floristry side of the business. Glyn and Diane still own the shop building and are our landlords, to whom we are grateful for their ongoing support.
The Dakers had seen the filling in of the canal in the 1950s, the Baines saw it reinstated in the late 1990s! Imagine running the shop in these times!

How lucky are we that we have a farm growing fantastic veg within 30 miles of the shop, they have started doing spring onions for the first time and I must say they are fantastic just like all all the others we get from them, they are D Westwood & Son from Wakefield.

Some of us at GVG are joining in with Huddersfield Giants to walk 100 miles in April and raise funds for Pancreatic cancer. We start tomorrow in the shop!

29 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer every day. So that's why, this April, I’m embarking on a journey to walk 100 miles for Pancreatic Cancer Action and help save lives through earlier diagnosis. Just £10 could help print and distribute Pancreatic Cancer Health Information booklets dire...

Watch this space for more on team “Green Valley Giants”…

Huddersfield Giants have thrown their support behind the 100 miles in April for Pancreatic Cancer, after Harry Rushton's father, a survivor himself will be taking on the challenge.
