So this isn’t a post I’d usually write, but I genuinely can’t not mention it…

Earlier this week I had a message from a lovely new customer whose daughter had recommended she get in touch with me (thank you! ❤️). The reason? She’d fallen in love with a style of Thomas Sabo bracelet retailing at around £130, and her daughter said, “Ask Sarah if she can recreate it.”

She sent me a photo (which I’ll attach below). At first glance I thought, “Okay, freshwater pearls and genuine turquoise… I can see why it might be £130.” Fair enough.

I made her two versions:
✨ A faux pearl and blue tiger’s eye bracelet.
✨ A mixed crystal bracelet using Lapis Lazuli, Amazonite and Blue Howlite, as they’re what I believed the original contained. I used Howlite as a more budget-friendly alternative to turquoise.

Girl… no.

I was really pleased with my recreation and thought, “Apart from the pearls, what exactly are they charging for?” So I went to have a proper look.

Imagine my surprise when I read the words…

IMITATION TURQUOISE.

…I beg your finest pardon? 😂 So… dyed howlite then?

I kept reading, still trying to justify the price.

Recycled 925 sterling silver or gold-plated charms? Same, hun.
Elasticated bracelet? Same.
No fancy clasp. Same.

Then I looked at another style.

£140 for “garnet zirconia.”

Do you know what that means?

Cubic zirconia in a garnet colour. No garnet. Just coloured CZ.

Now, don’t get me wrong, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with imitation stones or cubic zirconia. I use affordable alternatives myself where they’re appropriate, and I’m always honest about exactly what you’re buying. My issue isn’t the materialls, it’s charging luxury prices while many customers understandably assume they’re getting genuine gemstones.

The best bit?

My customer walked away with TWO handmade bracelets, saved around £100, and her daughter earned a discount on her next order for recommending me. ❤️

So it did get me thinking…

I’ve spent years trying to keep my prices as affordable as possible, and I haven’t increased them in a long time despite the rising cost of genuine crystals, sterling silver, findings, packaging and postage.

After this little eye-opener, I’ve realised I’m massively undervaluing my own work.

So yes, my prices will be increasing from yesterday.

They’ll still be fair, they’ll still be far below many high street brands, and you’ll always know exactly what materials have gone into your jewellery. Every piece is handmade by me, with care, and I believe that’s truly worth something.
