The excitement around the world for the B17 Utmost has been a joy to observe. The first Utmosts have landed in East Asia, and a handful of the region’s most popular bike stores have been using them on some truly enchanting builds.

Our friends at BLUE LUG bike shop know the B17 well: they collaborated last year with Brooks on a sold-out run. For their build of Utmost quality, they specced a Rivendell frame with some elegant Middleburn cranks and a front basket, rear rack combination. The sedate, swept-back handlebars and rising top tube pull it all together.

松果商號 Pineconeworks in Taipei also took a Rivendell frame as the foundation for their Utmost build, this time a Roadini model made for all-road surfaces. Admire the way the tan wall and sand-coloured rubber of the Tomii x SimWorks tyres pick out the colour of the natural veg-tanned leather on the Utmost.

For ROOKEY CYCLERY in Seoul, South Korea, the Utmost is the crowning glory on a rugged, adaptable rig built around a Rune Rufus Stone frameset. It’s got a Campagnolo threaded headset and Paul Canti brake levers attached to a Stridsland Anchor handlebar, among other charming details.

Lighter, more durable, more adjustable.

With the B17 Utmost it was ever our intention to do things differently. We examined every element of the product and rebuilt accordingly. For the metal frame of the saddle, we replaced the rails with AISI 304 tubular stainless steel. This made them both lighter and stronger than conventional steel; only the titanium model of the B17 can boast lighter rails.

The straight part of the frame is one-and-a-half centimetres longer, providing more space for attachment and greater choice in how you mount the Utmost to your bike.

This strong foundation is the secret to many years of enjoyment, and is part of the reason why, if you give it time, the B17 Utmost will reward you many times over.

One of the best things about putting the B17 Utmost into the world is the builds it becomes a part of. Have a butcher’s at what a small handful of European Brooks dealers did with the first Utmosts into each of their stores.

BABYLDN built a beauty of a red special, complete with side-pull brakes. The red Breezer frame dates to some time in the ‘90s and those alt bars alone are worthy of a thesis or two.

The goodtime guys at Guten Biken created an adventurous all-weather build around a Genesis Croix de Fer frame, with stately fenders and a SON dynamo powering the Ladelux lighting.

Our owlish Parisian pals, La Chouette, produced an on-trend tonal treat that almost looks too pretty to ride. It’s rigged up with trusty friction shifters, some solid city-rubber, and beautiful silver cockpit to top it off.

Introducing the B17 Utmost, the product of several years of hard work. It is the finest expression of quality to ever receive the Brooks England stamp, representing 160 years of dedication to quality and heritage.

Petor and Taylor explore the Brooks England factory in Smethwick and the reason for their odyssey to get here becomes readily apparent.

In the first two instalments, we followed the pair on their journey to Birmingham in Petor’s marvellous old Daimler.

Episode one saw Petor pick up Taylor on his arrival in the UK. Episode two centred on Taylor’s first taste of a good old British car boot sale.

Now, they’ve finally made it. They’re perusing the different factory machines with the avid enjoyment of two guys who just love old metal. And, naturally, the true purpose of their visit emerges.

This was something a long time coming. Over a hundred years in fact. The B17 Utmost, the finest articulation of the totemic Brooks England leather saddle that we have ever produced.

Back and forth to the tanneries we went: poring over details, testing, discarding and beginning again. We arrived at the finest leather we’ve ever secured. Supple without weakness, resilient without rigidity, and destined to age with grace. It is minimally dyed to preserve its inherent beauty.

Much like Theseus’ ship, no part was spared scrutiny. The rails, the tension pin, the nose..

To purchase this saddle is to make a commitment: I will ride this saddle for miles, it will be with me many years, the bond will only mature with every passing pedal stroke.

Give it time, and it will return the investment tenfold.

The utopian pursuit of newness is ultimately a dead end. A thing can only be new once.
