Let’s chat about something that’s been on my mind a lot lately. 🧵✨
We all know AI is the biggest conversation right now. To be completely honest, I am really not a fan of AI when it comes to art or design. Seeing machines use other creators’ hard work to generate images just doesn’t sit right with me.
As someone who creates every single piece of my work by hand, my heart sank a little this week. I saw an ad for an AI course teaching people how to generate a design collection for Spoonflower. The actual tagline? “No creative skills needed.” 💔
It fills me with dread to think about marketplaces like Spoonflower getting flooded with AI-generated work. It feels like a tsunami is coming that could easily drown out original artists and surface pattern designers who pour their souls into their craft. I really hope buyers will always choose the heart and soul of original, human artwork.
That being said, I don’t think AI is all bad. I think it does have a helpful place in our daily admin and workflow tasks! For example, the new “Layer Clean Up” tool in Photoshop has been a lifesaver. I always label my layers so art directors, agents, and product developers can find exactly what they need. Having a tool suggest names and clean up my workspace saves so much time.
But there is a huge difference between using a tool to speed up your workflow and using a tool to replace the artist entirely.
It’s happening right now, and I’d love to hear your thoughts. Do you think platforms like Spoonflower need to step in and protect original artists? Are you worried about your designs getting buried, or are you finding ways to make AI work for you? Let’s talk in the comments! 👇👇👇
