Due to worsening weather conditions this weekend and our market safety standards, we are sorry to say that South Shields Market is cancelled this Saturday 12th September.

We are grateful for the support of the traders in this decision, and we hope you can continue to support them this weekend in other ways! 💙

We will hopefully be back next Saturday 19th September, and we have some lovely things planned over the next few weeks as we build our Autumn events calendar around the market place!

Including live storytelling and illustrating, cake-making demos, live music and our upcoming market jams!

CANCELLED - Saturday 12th September

Due to worsening weather conditions this weekend and our market safety standards, we are sorry to say that South Shields Market is cancelled this Saturday.

A lemon pond pudding, made from scratch in front of you - this Saturday at South Shields Market.

The wind had its way last weekend, so are coming over from Gateshead this Saturday instead for their live cookery demo, leaning into the Be-Ro classics and the puddings that used to be Sunday standard round here.

The centrepiece is a lemon pond pudding, a proper traditional English suet pudding.

You'll see the whole thing done start to finish: making the suet pastry, lining the pudding bowl so it holds its shape, and sealing it properly before it goes in to steam.

We've also got The Storytellers joining us for the first time, the much loved street band, playing out across the market through the day.

Week by week, the Local Heroes team are working on the small, incremental improvements that see South Shields Market build back to the vibrant, sustainable force that we know it can be.

Sometimes, it takes doing something different in order to bring new people and a broader sense of purpose to such an iconic place.

That's why, as of 26th September, we are working with Sunderland based, Welsh musician Ruby Kelly to launch 'Market Jam' - a weekly 'turn up, tune up and join in' music collective designed to promote local, independent talent.

Ruby is no stranger to the Local Heroes team having featured on our podcast, played at many of our events and worked with us to create 'Born and Raised' the signature tune for our documentary series, Out and About.

‼️ MARKET NOTICE ‼️

Tomorrow's South Shields Market will go ahead as planned.

However, due to the unpredictable wind gusts, there may be reduced or amended trading.

Our traditional pudding demonstration by Cakeaholics will be moved to next week's schedule when she will be joined by tbe excellent street band collective, The Storytellers 🎺

We are working hard to build and grow the market and have got some exciting announcements coming up in September.

Clay, wheels and mucky hands - this Saturday at South Shields Market.

Muddy Fingers Pottery are joining us with a potter's wheel and a free hands-on session for grown-ups.

Watch a lump of clay turn into a proper bowl in front of you, then roll your sleeves up and throw one yourself.

No booking, no charge, just have a go.

Take your pot home exactly as it comes off the wheel, or leave it with them to be fired and glazed for a small fee and collect it from Muddy HQ in Jarrow.

It's the kind of thing our market should be doing - a reason to stop, watch, learn something and walk away with more than a carrier bag.

We want the town centre to be somewhere you spend an hour, not five minutes.

Pink Lane Bakery are with us for the second of their two Saturdays, so this is your last chance at the artisan loaves and pastries for a while.

Get there early - they went quickly last week.

Two new faces joining the line-up as well.

Katies Flower Hut brings fresh blooms and bouquets, and Box Pizza will be firing up proper pizza on the spot.

Give them a warm Shields welcome - it makes all the difference to a trader's first day.

The Ocean Beach Pleasure Park, South Shields competition is still open too.
