My name is Hannah, and I run Ahh Calligraphy from my flat in Southsea.

FIELD TRIP
On a family trip to Oxford last weekend, I decided to hunt for examples of calligraphy that popped up in a regular day. Here are my 🏅Top Ten:

🦅The Eagle and Child - the pub where Lewis and Tolkien would meet. Gothic font.
🌿The Garden - lettering in leaves!
☕️Alpha Bar - I love hand written lettering on signs! And chalk pens.
🖌A Japanese contract signed by fingerprints at the Pitt Rivers Museum .
🌅Georgina’s Coffee Shop - handpainting and strong serifs
📖Die Heilige Schrift - an early copy of Martin Luther’s German translation of the Bible
⚰️An Egyptian sarcophagus - showing how humans use words at every important occasion
🎊Lovely eclectic letters at Ansari
🍸Modern elegant copperplate at the Grand Café
🪕And my personal favourite - the mandolin of a WW1 soldier he inscribed with the battlefields he fought on 🖤

HELLO 👋🏻

Waving hello to you lovely Social Media Folks after a loooong absence!
I realise, looking back on my posts, that you have never seen my face! So I wanted to (re)introduce myself so you can see the person behind the pen.

My name is Hannah and I live in Portsmouth UK.
I’ve always been creative, even when all I was creating was squiggles at 3 years old (which may or may not have been on my parents’ carpet/furniture/wallpaper). I started doing hand lettering when Cool people were doing it (🐑) about 10 years ago, and then started taking lessons when I moved to Portsmouth.

Things I love:
✨Sunshine
✨Autumns
✨Chocolate
✨Being creative (calligraphy, painting, baking, knitting, piano, whatever!)
✨Making people feel safe and happy

Things I don’t like:
🙅🏻‍♀️Being cold
🙅🏻‍♀️Making lunch (I absolutely never have ideas...?)
🙅🏻‍♀️Being overtired
🙅🏻‍♀️Overcooked sprouts
🙅🏻‍♀️Sub-par stationery ( )

I am so grateful for the little community here that have enjoyed my calligraphy over the years. THANK YOU! I’m back after a bit of a break, and can’t wait to show you all some new creations!

ISOLATION
The Hovendens are back in isolation, so what better to do than a calligraphy project!
It’s been ages since I did expressive painting, and although it’s only a little start, I really enjoyed doing this.
This piece was inspired by a few people, the art of , the calligraphy of and the words of Thank you all! 💙🧡

Another little Easter-themed reflection for today, just squeezed in as the dinner cooked!

As a Christian myself, today is a great opportunity to remind myself of the fundamental things I believe in. This verse comes from a book written a few hundred years before Jesus was born, and reminds me that the whole Easter story has been part of God’s long-term plan all along.

I hope today’s fun and sunshine and family and Faith has brought you some hope 💕

WOMEN’S MONTH

Hi everyone! It’s been a while since I’ve posted but I HAD to come out of the woodwork to celebrate all the amazing women out there!

This week seems like THE best time for us to be remembering the value and contribution that women make to the world, and this quote by Nizar Qabbani beautifully combines my recently discovered love of Arabic poetry with my passion for women to be EQUALLY. RESPECTED. 💕✊

Boys, trust us, it’s really not.

I am so grateful for my lovely mum and all the other women in my life who set me the example of being passionate and listened to and free to take up space in the world. And I’m also grateful for all the men in my life who don’t leap to defend themselves before listening to what I have to say.

I love reading a good book. Especially when it has an afterword about the font it was printed in 😂
The calligraphy nerd in me sighed a happy sigh!

FAMILY

Yesterday, it was my Grandma’s 97th birthday. Our family clubbed together to send her a little audio message, but it felt a far cry from spending time with her, like we did in the old days where she would bake and cook beautiful things before she lost the ability.

I recently found an old recipe of hers in a book my mum gave me years ago. It was the apple pie she’d make every Sunday we visited. So, to carry on a tradition and to celebrate my grandma, I baked it. It smelled like happy memories.

Happy birthday Grandma, my pie was nowhere near as good as yours!

I had SUCH a blast doing this commission last week!
My lovely client Jessie wrote a story for her husband for their paper anniversary 🥰
Illuminated letters are so pretty, especially when they’re for someone’s very own private story book!

🎵MUSIC

In honour of the great video that came out last week, I copied out the lyrics to ‘Times Like These’ by Foo Fighters.

I’m seeing a lot of (valid) moans on social media right now about the time that we’re in and the people around us, but for all the bad decisions there are some brilliant people still doing wonderful things, rediscovering the value of loving each other; our families, distant friends, even strangers in need.

Well done to them, and to for making some great music!

FAITH

To practise my letters I love writing out quotes and poetry. At this time this is doubling as a mindfulness/meditation kind of thing too, in the midst of the storm of anxiety. I found this Psalm from the Bible really encouraging.
