Hot weather exercise guide for horses ☀️

We often see posts regarding dogs struggling in the heat but horses do too, especially during exercise, travelling or standing in direct sunlight. High temperatures and humidity can increase the risk of dehydration, heat stress and heatstroke.
Under 20°C
Suitable for normal exercise with sensible management and plenty of fresh water.
20–25°C
Reduce intensity or duration where needed and include regular walk breaks.
25–30°C
Avoid strenuous work. Keep sessions short and light, ideally early morning or later in the evening.
Over 30°C
Avoid ridden exercise where possible and focus on keeping your horse cool and hydrated.

Cooling tip:
Research by Dr Joe Pagan and the team at Kentucky Equine Research found that continuous application of cold water is the most effective way to cool horses down. There’s no need to scrape the water off between applications so keep the cold water flowing to help reduce body temperature as efficiently as possible.

The Generous Port Mouthpiece
A horse with a “tight mouth”
• Bracing
• Clenching, or over-active
combined with a “big tongue” often indicates an anatomical limitation where the tongue fills the mouth, leaving little space for a bit, leading to significant discomfort and resistance.

This mouthpiece is available with all cheekpieces.

INTRODUCING the Flat Weymouth Generous Port.
The Generous Port is available with all cheekpieces.

The Generous Ported was first designed as a Weymouth mouthpiece but has found a place amongst other disciplines.
SIGNS OF DISCOMFORT:
• The horse moves the bit around constantly, trying to find comfort.
• The tongue bulges out of the sides of the mouth (diastema).
• The horse puts its tongue over the bit or sticks it out.

“Help, my bit is RUSTY?”
It’s supposed to be ;)

Sweet iron bits are designed to oxidise (that rusty look) when exposed to moisture.
As the metal oxidises, it creates a slightly sweet taste that:
✔ Encourages salivation
✔ Promotes a softer, more relaxed mouth
✔ Helps some horses take a more consistent contact

So if your bit is turning that bluey-grey → brown, slightly rusty colour… don’t panic. That’s it doing its job.

What you don’t want:
✖ Thick, flaky rust (that’s neglect, not function)
✖ Leaving it wet 24/7 to force it (no need)

✔ Pro tip: Wipe your bit over with a little cooking/vegetable oil after cleaning, it helps slow excessive oxidation and keeps it in good condition for longer.

A light rinse after use + occasional oil = happy bit, happy mouth.
Not all rust is bad… sometimes it’s better communication 😊
