A topical poem I’ve written

Lying in State

the world stares on in awe
at our five mile queue
well behaved, standing for hours
to file past her coffin

young, old, tall, short, all colours
formal black suits, casual hoodies
white tee shirts, flowery dresses
all faces serious, respectful, sad

non royalists can still respect
a lady who worked at ninety six
kept her promise, a life of service
an inspiration to us all

personal loss revisited
united in grief, the world
shares our sorrow
surreal, the end of seventy years

A topical poem I wrote from experience.

Landguard Fort 2nd June 2022
Platinum Jubilee

Stone walls surround us
the old fort holds its patriotic history
with booming echoes of drum and canon

The crowd wave flags, red, white and blue
some, indifferent to royalty but celebrating
freedom after two pandemic years

As we sing for our Queen
We’ll Meet Again and Bluebirds
we hear mum’s voice vibrate on the air

Her sister and I hold hands
among the choir as tears flow
and love connects us in spirit

Forty shillings on the drum
wars won and lost, but always
the futility of lives ended too soon

At least mum
had her eighty five years
human conflict continues

Displaced Ukrainian families smile at the party
‘Jimmy will go to sleep in his own little room again’
what does this song mean for them?

On the parapet the bagpiper plays
a silhouette as the beacon is lit
orange flame burns against the night sky

People are here
together in community
there is hope for our future

I’m so pleased that my poem has been published online in Ripples Suffolk Poetry society magazine. It’s a poem I wrote last week on Mai Black’s course.

The Best and Worst of Mankind

Bombs bullets babies scream
in basements of blood
where a mother holds
her child in close coat cocoon
Pet dog silent with terror
A family in car, possessions piled
No day trip as raven shots
announce their eulogy

The shop assistant gives
her last slice of bread
to the old man stumbling
through rubble searching
for the photo of his late wife
A family of six are welcomed
into the hairdresser’s home
The kindness of foreign tongue
in a steaming bowl of soup

Creeds and colours unite
as the world sends supplies
and hope in truckloads
Candle flame penetrates darkness
The human spirit soars
A field of sunflowers lift
their heads towards the night sky
and a distant dawn breaks

A little something I’ve written……..

‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house,
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
But ‘twas not the same story in Boris’ place,
Where the MPs were feasting and quite off their face.
There was singing and shouting and laughing galore,
And all this was happening behind a closed door.
And with mistletoe hanging invitingly there,
They were snogging and kissing with tongues and no care.
‘But we always have a party’ the MPs shout,
‘We don’t understand what all the fuss is about!’
But what are you thinking, you stupid old fools?
You’re risking lives, spreading Covid, breaking your own rules!

A short poem to lift your spirits

Priorities

It maybe sport, music or a book
Gardening, DIY, or recipes to cook
I love theatre and swims in the sea
Time with friends and family is important to me

I like games, laughs, children and song
Sunshine and beach days I’ve loved all along
Poetry, deep talks, meditation too
My cats, my lover and good food will do

Whatever brings you joy, whatever you want to try
Don’t put it off and let life pass you by
Do what you love, and love what you do
Fall in love with life, and it will fall in love with you.

As you haven’t hear from me for a while, here are three cinquaines.
The modern cinquain is based on a word count of words of a certain type.

Line 1 has one word (the title).
Line 2 has two words that describe the title.
Line 3 has three words that tell the action.
Line 4 has four words that express the feeling
Line 5 has one word which recalls the title.

Apart
Pandemic separation
My heart aches
Missing you from abroad
Distance

Pets
Black cats
Kitty cuddles permitted
Comfort, preservation in isolation
Love

Faith
Spiritual connection
Life's purpose manifestation
Love, peace, joyful sensation
Trust
