Looking for your next read? Peter has just gotten back from a holiday, and still seems to be travelling the world in his head. Here's his recommendation for travel writer Norman Lewis' collection 'A Quiet Evening'.

"Norman Lewis is one of the great travel writers of the 20th century, best known for his account of the Sicilian Mafia. Dr Christina Rivera Garza, one of Latin America's best-known and most celebrated writers, dropped by to sign some copies of her many books. As writer-in-residence at the University's School of Modern Languages, Christina will be giving a talk this Friday at 5pm in School I of United College in conversation with Dr Liliana ChΓ‘vez DΓ­az, where we will have copies of her books for sale. Happy Earth Day from the bookshop!

Inaugurated in 1970, Earth Day is a global event in support of the environmental movement and environmental protection. In observance, we're highlighting the Vintage Earth series, a collection of novels from across the globe that, according to the publishers, "change the way we think about β€” and act upon β€” the most urgent story of our times: the climate crisis".

You can find them above the Blind Date books in our fiction section – us booksellers are particularly fond of "The Wall" and "The Mermaid of Black Conch".

The windows of the bookshop have blossomed! We were lucky enough to have illustrator and author Ella Frances Sanders to draw a scene inspired by her new book, 'Words to Love a Planet'.

'Words to Love a Planet' is a richly illustrated dictionary of words that connect us to nature. Roaming across languages and themes, it illuminates the texture that language brings to the natural world (and vice versa), and show us how language frames and reframes our relationship with it. Ella signed some of these beautiful volumes while she was with us, so you can pick up a copy while you're admiring the window.

If you've been around town today, you'll have noticed the 100th Kate Kennedy Spring Procession is taking place today!

With roots in ancient, medieval, pagan, and Christian spring rites, with Fifers commemorating "Cath Cinneachaidh", this is one of the more unusual and thrilling St Andrews traditions. We have limited copies of this beautiful volume by Martin Passmore and Noel Shelley on the history of this event, for those wanting to read up on the history of the procession. Many of the processors are in elaborate historical costume (did anyone see the full plate armour?) and reminded us of some of the historical fashion books we have lying around...

It's the weekend of Sands International Film Festival! We have a special treat for the cinephiles among us – legendary screenwriter and director Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) will be coming by the bookshop to sign copies of his novel 'Antkind'.

He'll be joined by poet Eva H.D., featured prominently in Kaufman's film 'I'm Thinking of Ending Things', and writer of short film 'Jackals & Fireflies', also directed by Kaufman. The signing will be at 11:30 on Saturday, with a talk from the pair at the Byre Theatre on Sunday. See you there!
