UPDATE: SOLD... Off to the Isle of Orkney.
Early original Burns Sonic electric guitar, circ.1960, fully working with Burns Hard Case. £795 plus shipping.
This early 1960 vintage English-made guitar may be small in size but it makes up for that in volume. The dual Tri-Sonic pickups produce that all-familiar 60’s vibe. These pickups are still used on the Brian May Red Special guitars.
This guitar oozes vintage. It has light wear on the maple finger board, which was only fitted to 1960 models, and the solid mahogany body has very light play wear on the front in the form of very small chips here and there. I’ve had a few of these lovely little guitars. This one is in the best ORIGINAL CONDITION that I’ve seen. I had to check, but it has not been refinished. The cherry red fade into black on the back of the headstock is hard to replicate.
When you play this thing through something like an old Vox or even my Selmer TV15 it sounds amazing. The sound is bright and jangly, without being thin. The vibrato system may be simple, but it’s very effective. In fact, the tremolo arm is stamped with “Pat APP” giving clear indication of this being a very early Burns Sonic. Potentially, this makes it one of the first 100 built. I’m sure there are plenty of Burns fans out there who will have something to say on this, but you get the idea. It’s an early one!
The neck doesn’t have a truss rod, but as it was made from hardwood, it has survived well for almost 60 years. The back of the neck is in good condition for the age. The original Van Ghent machine heads still function well and it retains the original cream tuning buttons.
It has Volume and Tone controls with rhythm/ solo switch together with a 3-way selector. So, you’ve got plenty of tonal choice.
I will supply this guitar in a Burns hard case which is worth a small fortune on its own.
Note: The originality of this guitar goes as far as retaining the smaller jack plug that was originally fitted. The guitar comes with an appropriate lead with a conventional jack at the other end. See the control k***s in the images, some are not original. The frets have some wear and the body has very light lacquer checking.
