🌿 Over the Garden Fence – The Picnic! 🧺🥧

After our amazing encounter with the deer, we made our way back through the woods, still talking about what we'd seen.

Monty, however, had other things on his mind! 🐕 Every few yards he was stopping to sniff and snuffle at another interesting scent.

By the time we reached the picnic site, we were definitely ready for something to eat.

And what a sight greeted us!

Jean and Peter had been busy setting everything up while we were out walking, and the table was absolutely groaning with food.

🥧 Chicken and ham pie
🥧 Pork pie
🥧 Mediterranean vegetable pie
🥐 Sausage rolls
🥗 Salad
🍕 Mini pizza bites
🍰 And plenty of cake!

My mum had even baked a lemon drizzle cake, despite not being able to join us, while I'd made a Victoria sponge using some of her homemade strawberry jam.

We grabbed our chairs, plates and cutlery from the cars and formed a queue for the feast.

Well... it was reasonably orderly! 😂

There were seconds...

Then thirds!

The children were soon eager to get back to playing football, while Monty and Arthur wandered around hopefully looking for crumbs — despite having their own water, biscuits and treats!

Then Mark spotted the last small slice of pork pie.

"Is there any more pie left?" he asked.

"There's one small slice," said Jean.

"Oh, can I have it?"

"Of course, dear," she laughed. "You're still a growing lad!"

Mark carefully put the pie on his plate.

Just then, Ellis shouted:

"Dad! Can you play football with me pleeease?" ⚽

Mark looked up.

"Grandad will play with you. I'm still eating."

He looked back down at his plate...

The pie had GONE! 😳

"Who's pinched my pie?"

He looked at his empty plate.

Then at the ground.

Then slowly turned to look at Monty...

🐕 Monty was sitting nearby, innocently licking the crumbs from his muzzle!

We all burst out laughing. 😂😂😂

I don't think Mark was quite as amused as the rest of us!

And so our woodland adventure came to an end — with a beautiful walk, an incredible encounter with a herd of deer, a feast of homemade food...
..and one very cheeky Labrador! 🌳🦌🥧🐕

Sometimes the best family days are the ones that don't quite go according to plan. ❤️
