🐻🐕The aptly named Dogs and Bears by (better known for his finely crafted novels for grown up readers such as Lanny and Shy) is MAD and I love it!
The dogs and the bears love brawling. Punch-up after punch-up ends in tears and injury. Until one day a miraculous event stops the fight and unites dogs and Bears on a mission! Hilarious illustrations by Dorothee de Monfreid add to the fun!

In the end I read 2 and a half books on holiday, only 2 of which were on my original list of possibles!
The Correspondent by Virginia Evans lived up to all the hype. A perfectly formed novel, entirely written as the prodigious correspondences of Sybil, a retired lawyer in her 70's. Somehow, from all these letters, the portrait of a feisty woman of indomitable spirit emerges, and you'll be rooting for Sybil all the way!

The Mercy Seat by Marcia Hutchinson was a delight! A funny, occasionally shocking, and authentic portrait of a young West Indian girl growing up in 1970's Bradford, it fizzes with energy and Mercy is a truly unforgettable heroine!

Finally I dived into The Light Years, by Elizabeth Jane Howard - the first book in her highly regarded quintet The Cazalet Chronicles. It's a modern classic but new to me, and oh my - I am LOVING this big, sprawling story of an extended family in the interwar period.... With a huge cast of characters from both 'upstairs' and 'downstairs' it somehow manages to be epic yet intimate. Utterly absorbing and a really good holiday read!
