During the Victorian era, many historic timber-framed buildings across the south coast were completely demolished to make way for grand modern developments. Cobblestone Walk managed to survive this wave of destruction thanks to a massive economic shift in the town.

When the Steyning railway line opened in 1861, the focus of the town's trade shifted closer to the new station area. Because the high street was no longer under intense pressure to modernise every single plot, our beautiful 15th-century structures were left intact and allowed to age gracefully. It is a wonderful twist of history that the arrival of modern steam trains actually helped preserve the old world charm you can still walk through today.

This traditional method was brilliant for horses and carts because it provided maximum grip and excellent drainage during wet weather, making it the ultimate high-tech roadway of its era! If you have ever wandered down Cobblestone Walk, peeked into our green floral haven, or paused to admire the seasonal cart, chances are we have already shared a smile. But for those who are new around here, we wanted to take a moment to properly introduce the heart and soul of Fleur de Lis: Joanne.

Joanne is the creative mind, the meticulous stem conditioner, the early riser, and the smiling face who brings this little shop to life every single day.

For Joanne, floristry has never been just about selling flowers. It is about the stories they tell, the milestones they mark, and the simple joy they bring to an ordinary day. From designing grand, romantic Sussex weddings to helping you choose the perfect single stem of eucalyptus for your bathroom shelf, she pours the exact same level of love, care, and expertise into every single order.

When she isn’t at the workbench wire wrapping delicate peonies or arranging the latest fresh delivery, you will usually find her welcoming locals into the shop, or chatting with our wonderful business neighbours on the high street.
