Guess who’s back? Back again..
~
It’s been a while folks, how are we all? We’ve been cooking something up with our new friends over .studio to release a new line of merchandise that continues to celebrate the food culture of MCR that inspired the original shops & then the CANTEEN
~
Introducing the “rice & three” T-Shirt, a wearable celebration of one of the cities most important food culture benchmarks - starting in the mid 80’s to feed workers in & around the “NQ” (didn’t exist yet) these places offered people a working lunch that was nutritious, delicious & at an amazing price - these places still exist 40 years later in a much changed landscape but still slap hard & in our opinion still make some of the best scran in the whole region
~
The shirts themselves are screen printed on vintage stock to provide a washed, used, sustainable garment that will vary individually as per purchase
~
Going live on the 15/11 - so keep an eye out for updates - 10% will go towards the to help fight food poverty in the U.K.

Pinch, punch, first of the month
~
We’ve been sort of putting off this post, trying to think of the best way to go about announcing our shops closure
~
At the end of April we broke for our SPRING BREAK with the realisation that we potentially wouldn’t re-open the business after May
~
It’s been a long slog against an uphill current that we’ve weathered, adapted, concurred, changed, struggled & laughed with along the way, making friends, trying to do things our way & trying to be fun whilst raising a family & adapting to life’s challenges, however at the end of March, after a terrible Easter with an unprecedented reduction in trade & footfall we knew it was beginning to end - a last breath was near, the dream was over, the curtain falling- in an ever more competitive market, with the relentless obstacles every business faces it ground to a halt
~
We’ve had an amazing journey along the way & thank you so much for following it & the amazing support you’ve given us & our family - we’ll never forget it
~
Bernie’s will still exist in spirit & in the future we hope to still collaborate, recommend, cater & bake things as well as launching some cool merch through this page - we will also be documenting some travels, family days out & eateries we love, so stay tuned
~

Just a bit of fun, & a homage to our favourite places to eat in the city we’re running a menu of a selection of curries, with rice everyday until we take our spring break on the 28/5

Nihari on the two Sundays, two meat, two veg each day & some breads - still doing bakes, still doing coffee, open later on the next two Fridays after this 😂

We’re excited, but don’t do this lightly as it’s an institution, Kabana is our fave, what’s yours? Our version will be sh*te in comparison but it’s a bit of fun

I was trying to pull together an image to help us promote celebrating the Scottish Bard’ Robert Burns but ended searching our camera roll to find some lovely images of us enjoying the beautiful country itself - the first enduring image is Kay’s in Edinburgh which we recommend to anyone who remotely mentions heading north 😂
~
So wildly jumping on the band wagon we’re pulling together an evening that hopefully resonates with the spirit of Scottish creativity & culture & to host our Scottish friends
~
We will be serving the traditional Burns supper Haggis, neeps & tattles w/ whisky sauce followed by Clootie Pudding & custard with a dram
~
Causal canteen service, friendly atmosphere & hopefully a recital of some of Roberts work
~
