Quaaluded smooth jazz sound piece from enigmatic internet phantom Bob Chocolate for in-house mixtape series Tabi Tapes - The final frontier?

Everyone wants to have eclectic taste, but are there any genres that are totally off limits?  Explained in the pink-hued printed four-page essay that accompanies this mix-tape ‘Smooth Jazz was ‘born’ in 1988 out of a market research focus group session for WNUA radio in Chicago’.  Visions of Kenny G as the sleep paralysis demon at the end of the bed arise.  Today, Smooth is a universally agreed pejorative tag for ‘real’ jazz collectors and readily avoided by anyone assured of having ‘taste’.  

Bob Chocolate thinks we need a new narrative.  

Subverting the public perception of Smooth being a purely pacifying functional form of muzak, this ‘100% digitally sourced’ mix-tape, produced entirely from the vaults of user-uploaded ‘anti-label’ music database CD Baby is confusingly presented as a hold-music experience.  The sounds of paradise in purgatory - indulgent sax lines ripple over vacuous canned drum machine whilst Rhodes keys spiral off endlessly into the golden sunset.  What’s the point that’s being made here?  The eternal and often highly competitive quest for rare vinyl records has undoubtably had a lot of the fun sucked out of it by crippling prices and increased scarcity.  Maybe we’re looking in the wrong place?  As Chocolate hints ‘The privately released rarities of tomorrow may only exist on the hard drives of those who care enough to download them today. Obscure entry in the private ‘family label’ of legendary multidiscipinary artist Dieter Roth.

The plainly titled Summer Music seems to be the result of a spontaneous and uninhibited recording session at Roth’s ‘Bali’ studio in the Icelandic town of Mosfellssveit with a group of Visual Communication students from the Icelandic College of Art and Crafts. Whether the students were willing or force to perform remains unclear. In typical Roth fashion, the recordings are impuilsive and embrace a sense of wide-eyed amateurism. It’s a raw sonic college captured in the moment - true improvisation - between non-musicians, domestic sounds are unfiltered, all sounds are welcome. Five parts capture five different scenarios, varying wildly between loose vocal interplay, full-frenzied assaults with everyone going at once and Schmaltzy piano tinkering. At more than a few moments though the clouds break to leave a warbling organ and sweetly sentimental organ notes where you can feel the personnel in the room know they’ve locked into something special. Joint best title (with Colette Roper) on Roth’s collectable private label and brutally rare! (NM - top copy including 7”)

Intimate and introverted folk sketches from San Sebastian architect and musician Jose María Lluch.

The excellent Hegoa label continues to bury deep beneath the surface of their native Basque region, it’s a stern dedication to regionality that consistently deliverers. La Proyección is the debut album from Lluch, assembled through a series of private home recordings spanning 9 year period. Much of the intimacy of these half songs and vignettes derives from their open domestic setting. The creaking of a bedroom door, an early morning dawn chorus coming through the window as the suns rays first hit and the brief pauses in-between phases. Lluch’s delicate fingerpicking and sotto voce seems to function purely for it’s own sake, an artist practice to nurture in-between the regular day-to-day activities. Much like the beloved work of Jon Collin or that excellent Ubaldo LP from some time ago, there’s an irresistible beauty in listening to that private in-between moments that may never have been meant to be shared. Zonked, mangled and reconfigured edits of popular American Rock band R.E.M - genius or disaster, you decide.

Any record store will surely have tales of their most colourful regulars. We also have many. To protect this particular character from legal proceedings we won’t divulge their identity, but it’s good to give some context about this tape. Said person is a long time store customer. They are awkward yet excitable with almost aggressive thirst to find new and old music. This pursuit is not deterred by what would be considered bad manners. Wandering upstairs to find stuff we haven’t listed yet, drifting behind the counter to check what isn’t for sale - all standard practice and we love it. After drinking with this person one night a while ago, they confessed that after the pub their favourite thing to do is lie down in a bush close to their house, get stoned and listen to R.E.M. It felt like a confession of a man’s most personal, private pleasure. Then, a few weeks ago after opening up, a vintage Tesco bag for life had been stuffed through the letterbox containing this - Red Eye Music. A connection made real.

Now personally, smoking even the smallest quantity of w**d makes me feel like I’m going to die and I never spent time listening to R.E.M. But listening to this gives a new context. Everything’s pulled apart and drenched heavy with audacity’s most indiscreet plug-ins, re-rendering the whole thing into a heavily-baked dream sequence totally detached from it’s source. It’s too good to miss. Get a copy, find your own bush and get comfy… (Mint / New - NO download - cassette only).

Nostalgic Singhalese folk recordings from Sri Lankan national treasure Rukmani (Daisy) Devi, born in the early 1920 and died in the late 70s. Hard to date these recordings, but probably recorded in the 1940s, originally released in 78 but later published on the little-known Sri Lankan HMV label arm. Devi’s distinctive voice is instantly transportive, together with traditional Singhalese percussion and lilting melodies evoking a sense of old-world beauty from the ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’.

Very peculiar recordings performed by Dutch fluxus group Knieschijf (Knee?) released by private label Rijksakademie Van Beeldende Kunsten te Amsterdam. Almost zero information online but I’d guess Knieschijf were a pranksterish group of art-school squatters in the Rijksakademie. Minimal pieces, often anchored to the rattling of handmade instruments (if you could call them that) but occasionally using very primitive drum machines, stern basslines and unaffected vocals. As featured in the legendary Broken Music book. This is ART. Brutally rare!!!!

Mammoth three LP boxset on Italian folkloric series Albatros providing a comprehensive survey of Sardinia’s unique folk traditions. Lots of otherworldly polyphonic singing, flutes, mouth harp pieces, bag pipes. Ancient and earthy! Monster box.

Rare original cassette from British home recording wizard Robert Cox aka Rimarimba! A very playful blend of looped rhythms with interesting melodic counterpoint evoking a wide-eyed sense of amazement. Strangely naive yet complex at the same time. A piece of history!

Rare Ainu (indigenous Northern Japanese) folk collection documenting the ‘Tonkori’, a five string zither instrument widely used by the traditional performers. Parts of the instrument are named after the human body and the crisp sound is said to represent the crisp Northern atmosphere. Wonderfully stripped-back and hypnotic pieces with unusual rhythm and repetition. Some pieces are said to mimic a hungry fox wandering through the frozen tundra. Hard to find anywhere.

Mind-altering guitar seances from California mail-order mystic Master Wilburn Burchette.

As the story goes, Burchette began gorging on the full canon of parapsychological and occult literature from the early age of 12, heavily engrossed in the world of Tibetan mysticism alongside developing his own unique improvisational techniques for guitar. Channelling his esoteric study of vibrations, he crafted a uniquely hallucinogenic playing style crafting tonal patterns and pictures. In 1973, alongside his Brother (a chemist), they launched Burchette Brothers Productions with the Guitar Grimoire LP, self-funded and self-released, advertised in the back pages of various occult literature publications throughout the US. A private mail-order franchise was born. Or perhaps not - five years later after a short-run of now cult releases, together with hand-drawn artwork, a block-printed ‘Psychic Meditation Course’ and a variety of other paranormal goodies, the brothers abruptly ceased operations, discarded everything and burnt what they could. Maybe they went too far? Engulfed in the practice of crossing into other realms weights heavy on the mind. Burchette’s haunting modal glissando, quivering steel tremolo and suspended harmonics sound like little else though, as if picking up the thread of American Primitive Guitar and carrying into the domain of the supernatural. It’s a story that’s almost too good to be true, but it is. Perhaps the epitome of the US private press outsider. Rare OG! (VG++)

Seminal Children’s educational music devloped by pioneering composer Carl Orff designed to unleash the imaginations of young people. This is the second in the great Spelen Met Muziek series by Dutch / Flemish music educator Pierre Van Hauwe captured in the his hometown of Delft. Inventive minimal percussion and expressive melodic twists - one of the best!! (NM)

Stunning Greek folk collection, melancholic and evocative, exploring the poetry of Giōrgos Sarantarēs. Seemingly quite unknown.. WOW!

Exciting contemporary music from great Hungarian composer László Sáry (NM)

Time capsule original recordings from Hawaii. Not your typical flowery shirt / ukulele stuff. From memory one disc is pretty forgettable, but another has beautiful choral pieces. Big tip!

All about the A-side. Heads-down dub/wave wrecking ball from the mysterious Tumbling Tears. Drenched in echo, nagging cowbell, deranged collaged sounds and percussion always teetering on the edge of unravelling. Monster track. B-side is forgettable.

Expansive, eye-opening, one of a kind 3LP boxset documenting the musical activities of Japan’s dwindling Goze community.

Goze is a term that relates to visually-impaired female musicians who roam the countryside (mostly in the rugged North Westerly region of Niigata), scraping a living going door-to-door playing a particular style of vernacular folk music with voice and shamisen. Their stripped back and emotionally-intense improvised folk songs focus on sexually explicit content laced heavy with innuendo, double-love suicides or other dramatic / taboo content. Being outliers in a typically ridged Japanese society, they were often ostracised and persecuted, forming bonds within their own unit utilising a form of tactile language. Although, they carried the
