Happy Oatcake Day!

It’s our local speciality within Stoke-on-Trent and the surrounding areas and dates back to the 18th century. The Staffordshire oatcake is a kind of savoury pancake (but not a pancake 😉) made from oatmeal, flour and yeast and can be enjoyed mainly with warm fillings such as cheese, bacon, sausage and mushrooms. Although some people may experiment with further fillings or even enjoy them with something sweet inside.

They became a staple diet of the pottery workers many decades ago and fuelled the workforce of the North Staffordshire industries. In the 20th century oatcake shops had emerged and were also often sold through the windows of houses to customers on the street.

Nowadays with over 40 oatcake shops across Stoke on Trent to visit, a delicious oatcake or two is never far from our doorsteps. Some shops even post out the dry mix for people to make them at home if you live further afield and just need that Oatcake fix!

We have had a dig into our archives to uncover these amazing photos of our home over the years.

Our building has been the heart of our business for over 50 years! However, did you know that it was a cinema and music venue back in the early 1913s until around 1921 before being a pottery workshop and warehouse. It was called the “Alexandra Picture Palace” 📽️ Some of the cinema design and architecture remains and can still be seen throughout the warehouse.

It may have had different looks moving through the decades, but one thing remains the same and that is that we still provide a quality and reliable service to our customers on our doorstep and further afield 📦
