πŸ₯’ Courgette Appreciation Post πŸ₯’

I think the courgettes deserve a little recognition for their incredible productivity as a plant! 🌱

Any home gardener will know the feeling of apprehension when you realise you may have planted a few too many courgettes. At this time of year, you can quickly find yourself feeling overwhelmed by the sheer number of fruits! One day there’s a tiny baby courgette, you blink, and suddenly you’re surrounded by whopping marrows because you took a few days off picking. πŸ˜‚

But really, this productivity should be admired. Before too long, autumn will arrive, the plants will finally give up and those summer courgettes will become a distant memory. And then, of course, we’ll be wishing we had them back!

This year I sowed three successions of courgettes to keep our CSA and farm shop well stocked throughout the summer. The first sowing was made on 21 March on the heated propagation bench and planted out under fleece in the tunnel. They started cropping at the end of May and have been churning out around 2–3 courgettes per plant every week ever since. Those same plants are still producing now, although they’re certainly looking a little tired after all that exertion! πŸ˜‚

Their stems have become impressively long, with all the old fruiting points visible along them β€” a record of just how hard they’ve been working.

We made a second succession in the middle tunnel in April, while our outdoor courgettes were only sown on 25 May. At this time of year they grow incredibly quickly and are now right in the prime of production.

So, show your courgettes some love and make the most of these overachievers of the vegetable patch. You’ll miss them when they’re gone!

And if you’re currently surrounded by a courgette glut, here are a few ideas for inspiration:

🍫 Courgette chocolate cake
πŸ§€ Roast courgette quesadillas
🌿 Courgette frittata or quiche
πŸ₯’ Courgette fritters
🍲 Cheesy courgette soup
πŸ§€ Stuffed courgettes

And one for later: grate and freeze courgettes in portions to add to soups, curries, sauces, cakes and savoury bakes through the winter.

Long live the courgette! πŸ₯’πŸ’š

πŸ₯• Caught red-pawed! 🐾

Pippin has stolen a rather large carrot and, rather than making a getaway, decided his best option was to stay completely still in the market garden and hope nobody noticed him. πŸ˜‚

Unfortunately, his hiding skills need a little work… That guilty face gave him away, and as soon as he realised he’d been spotted, he dropped the carrot! πŸ₯•πŸΆ

Caught in the act! πŸ˜†

What do you get up to on a Friday night? πŸŒΏπŸ’

We’re busy getting everything ready for a full-on weekend ahead! I’ve got 25 bunches of flowers to arrange, while Michael is busy packing up crates of freshly harvested veg ready for tomorrow.

Growing and selling veg is definitely a lifestyle, not a 9–5 job! There’s always something to harvest, wash, bunch, pack, arrange and load up (and that's after all the work growing it in the first place) β€” and Friday night is no exception when you’ve got a busy weekend ahead.

Tomorrow we’ll be in two places, so you can find Muchalls Kailyard both at the farm and a little closer to Aberdeen.

πŸ₯• Michael will be at the Bridge of Don Producers Market 9am-12pm, bringing along a selection of our freshly harvested vegetables and flowers.

🌱 Ella will be running the farm shop here at Muchalls Kailyard, open 11am–3pm, with plenty of seasonal veg and flowers to stock up on.

If you’re in Aberdeen and fancy getting your veg from a local grower, come and find Michael at the market:

And if you’re closer to Muchalls, the farm shop will be open as usual.

Two locations, one very busy Friday night! πŸ˜‚πŸŒ±

We hope to see you tomorrow! πŸ’š

The shop is open today from 3pm–7pm, so pop by and stock up on some fresh veg, or treat yourself to a bunch of flowers.

We’ve had a few funny-shaped tomatoes appearing in the harvest this week… πŸ…πŸ‘ƒ The more character the better in my mind! They might not all be perfectly round, but they certainly make us smile.

Plenty of lovely seasonal produce in the shop today β€” come and see what’s been harvested. πŸ₯•πŸ₯’πŸŒΏ

Fresh from the field! πŸ₯•βœ¨

Harvesting some beautiful outdoor carrots today, and I'm really pleased with how they've turned out.

These were sown back in April as our middle carrot succession, with two beds planted to bridge the gap between our early polytunnel crop and the main field crop later in the season. They've actually been ready for a few weeks, but I've been trying to finish harvesting the tunnel carrots first so I could clear and replant those beds before moving onto the outdoor crop.

I may have been caught snacking while harvesting... and I can confirm they're tasting just as good as they lookβ€”sweet, crunchy and full of flavour!

These carrots have lovely fresh green tops too, so don't let them go to waste. They're perfect for making carrot top pesto, adding to soup or using to flavour homemade stock.

πŸ₯• If you need a carrot fix, the farm shop is open tomorrow (Saturday) from 11am–3pm. We'd love to see you!

Although it's still summer, it definitely feels like the seasons are beginning to shift here at Muchalls Kailyard.

As soon as the last carrots came out of one of the polytunnels, the bed was replanted with endive and chicory for our autumn and winter salad mix. These beautifully bitter leaves thrive as the weather cools, keeping fresh salads on the menu long after summer crops have finished.

Outside, parts of the market garden almost look like spring again. Everywhere a summer crop has finished, there's a freshly planted or newly sown bed taking its place. On a small, intensive market garden every inch counts, so beds rarely stay empty for long!

One of today's jobs was clearing the broad beans. I always enjoy seeing the roots covered in little nitrogen-fixing nodules. When they're actively fixing nitrogen, the nodules are pink inside thanks to leghemoglobin, a pigment that helps the bacteria convert nitrogen from the air into a form the plants can use. It's one of the reasons legumes are such a valuable crop in the rotation, helping to build soil fertility for the crops that follow.

We've also been direct sowing radish, turnips, spinach, rocket, a whole range of salad leaves, plus herbs including coriander and dill. Meanwhile, the propagation tunnel is filling up with trays of young plants. Giving them a head start under cover means they won't need planting out for another 3–4 weeks, allowing the current crops to keep producing for a little longer before the beds are replanted.

Some gardeners call this time of year the "second spring", and it's easy to see why. It's always fascinating to look across the garden and see mature summer crops nearing the end of their season sitting alongside tiny seedlings of quick growing crops that will fill the gaps and provide fresh harvests throughout autumn and into winter. πŸŒ±πŸ‚
