We have been ( not so secretly) working away at Redwell HQ on our next release.
It won't be a "brand new" game. Instead, we will be releasing some miniatures for Six Gun Showdown for crowd-funding later this year.

We have had each character sculpted and you can see four of them painted up below. The miniatures are all single casts, as we want to make it easy to just get started with painting them. We also wanted them to be easy for someone of any level of painting skill to be happy to paint. Consequently, we have let someone with a decidedly average painting skill have first go at them. I.e. we used Tom, who is decidedly average at painting and "can't paint eyes" (this could be why he prefers to paint fighty robots!)

However, we are using Tom's game design skills to good use. As a developer for the miniatures game Relics, he has experience of game design with miniatures. He is currently working on adapting the Six Gun Showdown card game to work as a miniatures game (2D becomes 3D) and he is making good progress.
As part of the crowd-funding campaign for the miniatures, there will be the basic rules for a small scale skirmish game involving a couple of gangs of cowboys/desperados/sheriffs, etc.

Why no announcement on date for crowd-funding?
The sculptor (Oakbound Studios) and caster for the miniatures are both near to Redwell HQ, so there is low risk for getting the miniatures made and shipped. However, Tom is now a stickler for not releasing things until he is happy with the rules. Consequently, until he has had enough time to play-test the basic rules we won't put out a definitive date, but we expect late Autumn/early Winter.

We will be showcasing more of the miniatures (and getting people better at painting than Tom to show us how good they can look) as well as how the game plays as a skirmish game over the coming weeks and months.

Our Attendance at UK Games Expo

The organisers at UKGE have recently announced the changes they have made to the event's regulations and guidelines in light of the recent announcements made by the UK government. Many people have commented about this and a number of people are no longer going to UKGE as a result of the changes. Below are my (Tom Lovewell's) thoughts, reasonings and responses. I can see the arguments for and against peoples responses to UKGE's announcement and think that everyone is entitled to make their own decision about attendance and be respected regardless of their decision.

Firstly, UKGE are stuck between a rock and a hard place. They were part of the UKs Trial Events structure and as a result of changes in law (assuming the UK government doesn't perform a U-turn in the next few weeks) they can no longer enforce the attendance requirements they had originally put in place, and can only have guidelines instead. It is not the organisers fault that this has happened.
Their only alternative is that they could cancel the event..... I dread to think of the financial cost this would have to them!

Given that UKGE is going to go ahead, it is now my decision whether to attend or not.
By the time the UKGE starts, it will have been nearly three weeks since I had had my second vaccination. Consequently I will be benefiting from having had a secondary immune response to Covid-19 antigens.

My education, training and experience in Immunology would be worth nothing if I did not believe that I should have a strong immunological defence against Covid-19 by this point. I would also be a hypocrite and be betraying my fellow scientists if I did not trust that the Covid-19 vaccines were effective.
I have trusted the BSG vaccination, the MMR vaccination, the Hep B vaccination, the Polio vaccination I have had in the past and there is no reason for me to change that trust now.
Consequently, I personally, will be attending UKGE, as I do not believe the risk to me will be any higher than for my everyday life, which currently includes working in a school.

However, there is an argument that even though vaccinated and having a reduced risk to myself, I could still be a carrier of Covid-19 and pose a transmission risk to others at the event who are not fully vaccinated. Thus, there will be measures I will be undertaking to reduce the risk I may pose to others.

I have read scientific articles published in Nature magazine reporting that there is some evidence that face masks can reduce the transmission of Covid-19 from infected individuals to others. Consequently, I will be wearing face-masks at UKGE for the benefit of other attendees. I will be happy to take my face mask off to talk to people directly, if asked (and as long as this won't affect others).

I will also be taking a lateral flow test every morning of the event and will endeavour to provide a picture of this along with the face masks I will be wearing over the course of the day on our Twitter account. I will also change my reusable masks throughout the day and sterilise them in the evenings.

I will be taking Nilaqua hand sanitiser with me, which I will be using throughout the event. It is an alcohol-free chemical based hand-sanitiser that provides 6-hours protection (I will be applying it more frequently than this) and has been shown to be effective against coronavirus species (yes, I read ALL the documentation for this product for my day job).

I hope this explains my standpoint for UKGE and how I plan to take the event seriously.

For those of you attending this year, I look forward to seeing you and will be demoing our games on the Boardgame Hub stand. I may even have some sneak peeks of future products to show!

For those of you not attending UKGE this year, I hope to see you at another tabletop gaming event in the future.

This Saturday, 5th June, we will be running live demo's of our games outside our (very) local store, Sourced in Stonehouse from 10am.

We are really looking forward to being able to run demo's again and meeting people.

We will be outside to keep things Covid compliant, and so bad weather will affect our ability to run demo's.

As the events of the last few weeks have unfurled and had a global resonance, I have been thinking about my stance and about whether it is appropriate to make a statement or just continue along as I have been doing.
Here is the thing, if I make a statement, could it be perceived that I am making a statement just “to be seen to be making a statement”, particularly because relatively speaking, my voice is considerably smaller than others. However, if we all stay silent, then our silence becomes complicity and whilst my one voice may be small, many small voices with the courage to speak up will become significant when joined together.

My personal stance, and that of Redwell Games, is to strive for equality and inclusivity.

To explain a very simple sentence in more depth.
I am a white male. I almost certainly have benefited, whether knowingly or unknowingly, from elements of privilege of unconscious bias throughout my life. I could be part of the problem, but I don’t want to be.
When I was a school I didn’t understand racism – I had no experience beyond a very homogenised existence. I grew up in a small town in the middle of East Anglia where the vast majority of my peers were white and generally from a heterosexual and Christian background. This photo from my final year in sixth form illustrates at least an element of this. At this time of my life, being different would have been an oddity.

Within a year of this photo being taken, I was an undergraduate at Imperial College London and my horizons broadened considerably. I met and made friends with people from across the UK and across the globe. People from vastly different upbringings, religious beliefs and sexual orientations. I learnt considerably more than just my Biochemistry degree over the 3 years I was at Imperial College.
I was lucky to continue to be part of such a diverse community during my career as an academic researcher. During this time, through natural discussion, I could find out more about those from other background. But, I also made mistakes due to my ignorance/lack of knowledge of other cultures. I have tried to learn from these mistakes to avoid making them again in the future.
I cherish the diverse community I was part of, and before I left academia I was part of the University of Sheffield Medical School’s Athena SWAN committee which promotes equality and representation in Higher Education and Research.

So for me, I want to promote diversity and inclusivity.

I disagree with racism, sexism, xenophobia, homophobia, transphobia, islamophobia, anti-semitism and any other form of discrimination.
I support peaceful protests and disagree with needless violence, whether perpetrated by those in power and abusing their authority, or those using a protest as an excuse.

As Redwell Games, I strive to follow these principles.
• We will always support inclusivity.
• Rules will be written in a gender neutral manner.
• As far as it is possible and appropriate, there will be a fair balance of genders and ethnicities in the characters and artwork. We want anyone to be able believe they could be a character in our games.
• Game components will not be differentiated by colour alone. Clear iconography and/or easily discernible differences will be used to facilitate enjoyment of our games by anyone with impaired colour vision.

In 2018, someone asked me whether the “Theme” card below from our improvisation-based party game, Vote Me was appropriate. Yes, it could be used in a racist manner. I specifically tried to avoid directing people towards this by giving the card the title “Colours” instead of “Colour”. Did I get this right? I chose to include the card in the game, because we use so many colours as adjectives in such a variety of ways. For example, finances are often referred to being “in the red or in the black”; green used in reference to inexperience or in reference to environmental concerns. However, as four of the six example colours on the card have been used to describe skin colour, should I have used a different combination of colours?

As humans, there are times where we get things right, and times where we get things wrong. When we discover we have got things wrong, it becomes our responsibility to strive to avoid repeating our mistakes. I will always be grateful to those who are willing to tell me I have got things wrong and been prepared to educate me so that I can correct my mistakes or misunderstandings and strive to avoid repeating them.
