What a welcome relief this beautiful rain was last night and this morning. I spent a good few hours potting things on in the greenhouse and planting out in the polytunnel to the sound of the rain. It certainly feels like a bit of life has been given back. Water butts also refreshed so I can put the hosepipe away again 🌧️🌧️😍

Goodbye May and hello June and summertime!
A month of extremes in temperature from frosts to extreme heat which wouldn't be normal in the height of summer, let alone late Spring.
Roses have been blooming. A visit to Chelsea with gorgeous garden grown flower displays, the tranquil beauty of Kazuyuki Ishihara's garden making me miss Japan, lots of naturalistic planting and recycled hard landscaping. A visit to Cambridge and loving the gravel planting around the colleges and Kettles Yard Painting Flowers exhibition.
I'm busy in the garden creating new beds and refreshing others whilst plants are hardening off and getting ready to go in the ground. The start of June is going to be busy! 😍

I direct sowed this Phacelia in March on one of my beds. You may have seen the seas of purple in fields as this is a great cover crop as well as green manure. It helps prevent soil erosion, surprises w**ds and once dug into the ground will help to release nitrogen to feed the soil. As well as this it's teeming with beneficial insects helping to keep the aphid population around my roses down and pollinate my crops in the garden. It's also a lovely cut flower. I highly recommend sowing some 😍

Not a very pretty picture or very upbeat but I suppose this is what happens to plants when it's hotter than in parts of Africa and Vietnam. I'm afraid I'm not joyful or happy about these temperatures.

My well watered sweet peas have frazzled in the tunnel which is well ventilated. I can't plant out any small plants that are desperate to go in the ground as they will scorch and frazzle. I'm watering twice a day to keep things alive which goes against trying to be as sustainable as possible in the garden.

We can no longer ignore the signs that our climate is dramatically changing and we need to better prepare ourselves to withstand what's to come. I feel sorry for those in Kent and Sussex who are again without water due to the incompetence and greed of privately owned water companies 😕😞

Hope everyone is staying cool and hydrated and hope for cooler days to come 🤞

A few days later and the compost is now in the hot zone! This means any w**d seeds will be killed off in the heat and all those microbes are working hard to break down the waste into a lovely compost I can put back in the garden 💚

As a gardener and grower composting is the single most sustainable and impactful thing I can do in my garden to cut down waste and create beautiful growing material for healthy plants! It's a win win and I encourage everyone to have a go if you can, however small. Do you compost?

We've gone from unseasonable warmth and dry of April to frosts, cold and hail of May 😞😕😬 The poor plants. Everything is looking lovely and green though. I've managed to plant some things out and hope for lots of flowers come June 🤞

Happy Beltane 🌞 A return to warmth and what a warm day it is today! I enjoyed putting this urn arrangement together using chicken wire as a mechanic to hold the flowers which were all picked from my garden last night and conditioned overnight.

Ingredients include: Sweet Rocket, lilac, dog wood, alliums, tellima, spirea, amalanchier, raunnuculus, Rose, Lily of the valley, sweet peas, geums

A true garden arrangement which looks and smells amazing in the house and signals the start to summer. Enjoy the Bank Holiday Weekend!
