Great to see our devices helping Bat Conservation Ireland carry out their valuable work!

Dr Niamh Roche, Bat Conservation Ireland's Senior Projects Manager (pictured), is using the Pixfra Arc thermal imaging monocular.

The Arc series has been purpose designed to enhance ecologists' capabilities during bat surveys and other ecological work, with devices offering wide FOVs reaching up to 32.3° to open up the observation area and allowing for larger amounts of data to be recorded.

'Not everyone is a fan of bats, and in the past, when I used to tell people what I did, they would take a step backwards, almost in horror,' says Dr Niamh Roche (53), who is Bat Conservation Ireland’s Senior Projects Manager.

'A lot of people are very scared of bats, and they have a bad reputation, mainly because people don’t really see them in the flesh very often, and the only thing they know about them is through folklore or myths.'

She says it's a myth that they get tangled in your hair ('I have long hair, and over the years of working with them, they have never shown any interest') and they don't reproduce like mice, with each bat only having one offspring a year.

'It is important that we try to protect them. If people are concerned about a bat flying into their house, they can rest assured that the bat doesn’t want to be there either, so they should just turn out the lights and open the window, and they will fly out by themselves'

'For those who have a roost in their fascia and soffit or attic, I would ask them to consider if they are causing a problem, and if not, can they tolerate them for a few weeks (before they go to hibernate elsewhere), during which they will be eating all the insects that could otherwise come into the house'
