Agnes and Vera About Us

Agnes & Vera opened its doors in the market town of Sturminster Newton in the heart of beautiful Dorset on 1st November 2007. Sue

Having worked at Agnes & Vera since it's inception, I was delighted to become the owner of the business in 2009. Supported by original team member, Jo, who is my invaluable manageress, star window dresser and always full of cheerful enthusiasm, we have been joined by Hannah, a wonderful, creative and bubbly young lady with a Retail Apprenticeship award to her name who also looks after our Facebook

and Twitter accounts as well as working in the shop. At Agnes & Vera, our aim is to offer good, personal, traditional service, supplying an hand-picked array of lovely products that we have carefully sourced and would happily buy for ourselves (and often do!). We cater for women, children and babies and try to find interesting things for the gentlemen too. We look forward to welcoming you.

It really is time to sign off and I want to thank you again for all of your messages. Please forgive me if I have not responded to each and every one of you.
Tomorrow, Saturday, will see a new business open at 15, Market Cross so I really must underline Agnes and Vera although it will have been a big part of my life and Jo's and full of happy memories.
Jo is enjoying some time off ( so am I ! ) and we shall still meet up. After all, working together for so long...well, she is more like family!
My thanks also go to Lucy for helping Jo when I couldn't be at the shop and she is the one who took our picture when we had
a belated "thank you Jo & Lucy" lunch on a beautiful sunny Dorset day.
Thank you all for everything!
Love Sue ###

Hi Everyone,
I promised to post an update about Hannah and what she has been up to!
Earlier this year, Hannah and her sister Lorna realised their dream to open their own business so if you want to follow their new adventure you will find them on Instagram and Facebook.
Look for Wild Olive Cleethorpes and you will see two bubbly, busy young women! Our very best wishes for great success with their beautiful shop! ###

Well, it is about time that I responded to all of those messages! Instead of waiting for the right photo to include and trying to compose the right words, I am sitting here, tapping away and letting it form, I hope, from the heart. I shall endeavour to respond to each and every message but wanted to start by saying a HUGE THANK YOU to you all for your kind thoughts and good wishes.
I hadn't meant to close quite so soon although it had been set in motion last October. I didn't close because I became unwell; that was out of the blue and put me in hospital for one day shy of two weeks, so I brought the closing day forward because I knew that I would not be able to keep it going as normal straight after coming home and my amazing Jo was determined to keep A & V open up to and including 1st. March. What a star and thank you Jo for your loyal and hard working support over all those years!
A thank you to to my good friend Lucy who helped Jo and especially on that final day.
( Girls, we'll try and have that lunch together soon )
So, for me it was quite surreal but I did have the opportunity to see a number of you as James & I stock-checked and packed up the shop and with help again from my Dream Team, the space was clear and ready for it's next chapter.
While the shop itself is closed, I am still tying it all up so I thought that it might be nice to update you in a future post or two, what we are doing. You may already know about Hannah and her sister who have opened a shop together. I'll find those photos for next time..........
With love, Sue xx
This photo is of the gift wrap that we had decorated the pole in the window with; it was like unwrapping the years!

Good Morning Friends,

I did promise to keep you updated!

One or two folk have asked if I am closing due to health issues. Well that certainly wasn’t the case when I put the wheels in motion in October.
However, I find myself writing to you from Dorset County Hospital Dorchester where I am potentially going to be for a few days yet. It was a surprise to me as much as to anyone else!
I was not going to advertise the shop for sale but let it take its natural course.

So this is a bit unusual for me and may be an odd way to advertise but if anyone is seriously interested in taking on Agnes & Vera then please get in touch but only via email.
My address is [email protected].

My reason for this? I would love to see an independent gift shop continue on the high street. Where else will I shop otherwise?
On a more serious note, continuing Agnes & Vera beyond its current 17.5 year story in town is a great opportunity. We have been blessed with a wonderful customer base and have many contacts and long term relationships with reps who help to stock the shop with great brands and products. It takes time and effort to build up these relationships and I’ve done my best to inform them of the shop’s future and help smooth the road ahead for possible future owners.
There are untapped areas that could provide more growth for the shop, such as increasing the social media footprint and offering an online shopping presence.
Running a small business is hard work, there may be sleepless nights, but it is rewarding in so many ways.

Although I had looked at closing in mid-March, I have brought it forward a bit to Saturday 1st March so Jo and I (hopefully with permission!) Will spend our last day together, serving you behind the counter one more time and to say ‘thank you’ for your support over the years.

Another bonus is that Jo would be willing to discuss her availability to help a new owner in some way. Her experience would be invaluable.

Currently there isn’t much else to say but more updates will follow if and when necessary. Once again thank you for all your support over the years!

Much love,
Sue

Well, our lovely Facebook community, after much deliberation, the time has come, after 15 years, to wind down my little "shop on the corner" ( I cried at "You've Got Mail" before I even had a shop. I shall need boxes of tissues if I ever watch that again, not that the situation was the same but just because..). Trust me, it has been a very hard decision to make but the right one. I am, after all ,15 years older, need a break and have other things that I would like to do, not to mention visiting young grandchildren who are growing fast. Jo and I are both finding it quite surreal, having worked together from the very start in 2007 before the business was offered to me in 2009. However, I don't think that either of us will be bored with the potential of a new adventure! I'm personally hoping for a "Gap Year" as I mentioned to my husband, even if it is time spent around the home and garden and picking up my sketchbook once more! It will feel like a luxury. This is not yet our "goodbye" at Agnes and Vera as you will still find the shop open as normal, one of us to greet you and the shelves stocked and displayed in our usual fashion, all at 20% discount including sale items!!! I will keep in touch as the weeks unfold and hope that we will see you soon. Sue xx

Firstly, a very Happy New Year to you all and I hope that you have enjoyed the Christmas celebrations.
I realised that I haven't taken as many photos as usual in the Autumn/Winter months so I put my wellies on this afternoon and headed to the garden to find a photo to go with this message. There was a brave little pale yellow primrose but I ended up in the greenhouse where a geranium was happy showing off it's bright pink flowers.
Of course, the Agnes & Vera sale is now on but as usual in January, we try to keep these items changing so that no-one misses out.
Enjoy the rest of however much holiday break you are taking and hopefully we will catch up with you soon.
Sue xx
