☠️Did you know the word “Credenza” comes from a tradition involving poison? The word comes from the Italian credere, meaning “to trust”.

In Renaissance Italy servants would taste food and drink in front of important guests to prove it had not been poisoned. The food was placed on a cabinet during this ritual, which became known as a credenza.

By the Victorian period credenzas had evolved into elegant dining room cabinets such as this example. They were used to store serving dishes, glassware and decorative objects while also acting as a serving surface during meals.
