A very good miniature book in the original full leather binding. 50mm x 37mm x 12mm. [4pp.]/pp.509 . Black calf with double gilt filet border. Spine with three raised bands, gilt decorated compartments and gilt title. All page edges bright gilt. Inner gilt dentelles. White leather endpapers. Neat dedication to front free-endpaper: "E. K. Colville June 1852". Half-title present. Printed title-page. Clean Latin text throughout. VG.

A very good later half leather binding. 8.4" x 5.2" x 0.8" (21.1cm x 13.4cm x 2.1cm) 8vo. pp.xlix/pp.157/pp.160-196/[1p. - Advert dated 1771] + 9 engravings ( 8 folding) all dated Nov. 1771, and some signed by "Ovenden". Brown morocco spine and corners over marbled boards. Hinges and corners rubbed and bumped. Spine with raised bands and gilt title: "L'Art Des Armes Simplifie". Marbled endpapers. Engraved armorial bookplate (by "A.W.T. Del at Sculpit.") to verso of the front board for "Douglas Fairbanks Jr." With motto: "Fides Conatus Et Fidelitas". With parallel English-French text and added title pages. All engravings present. Toning to frontispiece and title, otherwise light toning to all pages. Final leaf absent ( 'Directions to the binder ... ').

**The motto "Fides conatus et Fidelitas" translates to "Faith, Endeavors, and Fidelity" and is the motto of the coat of arms of Douglas Fairbanks Jr., which was granted by The College of Arms on April 6, 2015. This ceremonial symbol includes a shield with two flaunches connected by a ribbon and bow, and a crest of a bald eagle's head holding a spur between two olive branches.
