Robert’s Fin’tastic Fishy Fact 🦞
This reel-y is the perfect season to buy lobsters! At this time of year, the catches become abundant and there’s no special worldwide celebrations to drive the prices up so watch out for special offers in the shop!

So more lobstery facts for you…

🦞 They swim backwards!! Their tail contracts quickly, which thrusts them away.
🦞 To grow, they moult their hard outer shell – to do this they absorb water into the body tissues, so the lobster swells up and ruptures through their exoskeleton (like the incredible hulk in a mood!)
🦞 They’re very vulnerable after moulting, so tend hide away until their shell is hardened up again, munching on their old shell, so they can reuse the calcium!
🦞 One of the largest lobsters ever recorded measured 1.26 metres (4 ft 1½ in) and weighed around 20½ lb (9.3 kg). Its enormous claws alone weighed around 1.2 kg (2.6 lb)!

Just a 20-minute coastal walk from Latimers Seafood, you’ll find the iconic Souter Lighthouse.

Built in 1871, Souter Lighthouse was the first lighthouse in the UK, and one of the first in the world designed to be powered by electricity, helping guide ships safely past the dangerous reefs of Whitburn Steel for over a century.

Today, it’s cared for by the National Trust and remains a much loved part of our coastline.
