The number of whiting taken in our area dropped off last. This is probably due to the amount of sprats and sandeels still around. There have been some sightings of seagulls feeding on them off Seaham, Roker and Marsden. We now need some winter weather to push the feed off into deeper water.
Seaham North Pier has produced mixed bags of codling, whiting, po***ck and dogfish. Hendon Prom has seen whiting along with the odd thornback ray.
Roker Pier has seen whiting along with coalfish, codling to 3lb and a few haddock.
The rock marks at Whitburn and Marsden have given up wrasse, dogfish and the odd codling to 3.5lb.
Codling have been taken in better numbers from the Northumberland rock marks with cod to 7lb and bags of up to six fish.
Boat anglers fishing 5 miles plus have reported mackerel still in fair numbers, along with cod and ling from the wrecks. Some good sized haddock up to 2lb have also given good sport with mussel baits taking the better fish.
