ACE Trains
Servicing and Repairs

The following is a note from Allister Hughes who is ACE Trains’ official agent for servicing and repairs. The ACE Trains web site previously made mention previously of the services of Larry Peacock who had acquired a lot of spare parts from ACE’s former factory prior to 2008, and had carried out repairs on early ACE Trains product. We have been advised by Larry’s daughter, that he had unfortunately passed away earlier this year. It appears that along with his trains this has gone to auction. Larry’s contact details have been removed from the web site.

“As some collectors may already be aware I undertake the servicing and repair of ACE Trains, primarily locomotives since early production to that of today, and have been doing so for several years and as far as I am aware, I’m the only remaining individual of those listed to continue to offer this facility my details being noted on the ACE Trains London website under the Contact header. However, one should be made aware that the availability of spares has always been a problem in that I believe in the past spares were salvaged from damaged product that could not be sold on for whatever reason.

This avenue ceased to exist some time ago therefore virtually nothing is available now for older product and if required it either has to be sourced elsewhere if possible or made in house if I can when required.

I however have been able to establish links with their current manufacturers from whom I hope to be able to source spares relative to some of the later releases in order to offer my ongoing support.

I also provide similar services relative to other brands + convert locomotives from DC to DCC operation in addition to manufacturing single or dual DC Train Controllers 0-12v x 5a or 0-24v x 4a, sophisticated Rolling Roads with a built in train controller, 2 & or 3 rail operation, up to 10 x 0-2min sound effects, meters for volts and amps + can drive a external layout etc."

Our new ACE Trains London E/47 Standard Class 5 stretching its legs recently at the The Gauge O Guild Group Central Southern 0 Gauge Group Wimborne Dorset group’s test track. You’ll notice that its running on the inner Maldon Track code 200 three rail track on which most vintage style stock runs admirably. There’s been a lot of enquiries recently regarding the future of Maldon. We’ve been advised by Paul Lumsden of WJVintage that he believes Ron Fraser has now retired and that his web site, email and phone numbers for the business have been taken down. We hope to speak to Ron shortly to see what other solutions may be forthcoming. Ron, if you’re reading this, please contact us. We also hope to be able to post other events where the Standard Class 5 locos can be seen in action. If you already like what you see we’re taking orders at https://shamrocktrains.com/product/ace-trains-e-47-br-standard-class-5-locomotive/

We’ve been putting the new ACE Trains London E/47 BR Standard Class 5 loco through its paces over the past few days. Shown here from last night at Hornby 0 Gauge Trains - HRCA Wessex is the Class 5 running effortlessly on Middleton tubular track. It generated a lot of highly favourable response and the delicate balancing act of maintaining the traditional ACE coarse scale image whilst combining the utilisation of many of the features that appeal to 0 gauge finescale modellers. Orders can be placed via the Shamrock Trains site: https://shamrocktrains.com/product/ace-trains-e-47-br-standard-class-5-locomotive/ With the range of carriage and freight stock now available this will undoubtedly be a 4-6-0 winner!

We’re now taking orders for the all metal ACE Trains E/47 British Railways Standard Class 5MT locomotive. It was a 4-6-0 locomotive class with 172 being built between 1951 and 1957 either at Derby or Doncaster. They will look superb on any 0 gauge model railway layout of the BR period. The key to this highly successful class was ‘standardisation’ - essentially the same locomotive in two variations. The majority were fitted with Walschgaerts Valve Gear, but also in two batch constructions at Derby, a total of 30 were fitted with Caprotti Valve Gear. In terms of production we’re only addressing the Walschgaerts version which accounted for the vast majority of locomotives that were built.

There were some minor modifications according to region reflected by tender type, return crank fixing, coupling rods and whistle location. There were also some lessons learnt by the six year build programme, and by the type of equipment later added e.g. Automatic Train Control (ATC) and Automatic Warning System (AWS). However, we will seek to minimise these differences in the selection of models being built.

There were six different tender types - BR1, BR1B, BR1C, BR1F, BR1G and BR1H, and for this coarse scale production, we’re offering three tender types specified in the option listing. In terms of coarse scale design most customers will be broadly aware of the BR1 tender with narrow coal bunker style as used in the Britannia class (E/27), whilst the BR1B had a Stanier-like appearance very similar to the Black 5 tenders (E/19).
British Railways Standard Class 5MTs were built in 13 different batches (order numbers) for specific British Railways (BR) regions - London Midland Region (LMR), Scottish Region (ScR), Southern Region (SR), Western Region (WR) which included one of the Caprotti batch, Eastern Region (ER) and North East Region (NER) - that they were initially allocated to. This was dictated by the type of tender that was originally fitted to the locomotive. However, because of its ‘standardised operability’ individual locomotives were invariably moved around the country.

In terms of liveries there are just two basic styles: BR black with grey, cream and red lining for mixed traffic locomotives (both early and late totem emblems on the tender) with minor design modifications. From May 1959 some 20 locomotives based on BR(S) metals received name plates formerly carried by Southern Railway King Arthur class locomotives. These were specially built nameplates painted with both red and black backgrounds and attached to locomotives finished in lined black. Whilst from 1958 when BR adopted dark green livery for express passenger traffic, many of these BR(S) black lined named locomotives were then used for premier line duties including regular rosters for Waterloo-Southampton boat trains.

BR dark green livery (late totem) was designated for Standard Class 5 locomotives at the end of 1958 for express passenger traffic work. BR(W) was the first to adopt this. With dark green livery there were differences in the orange lining according to the BR shop where the Class 5 was returned to e.g. Eastleigh on the BR(S) adopted twin orange lining at both the top and bottom of the valence - other shops around the country painted with just a single orange line.

Due to the continued disruption at The Station Master’s Rooms, who now own the ACE Trains brand, Shamrock Trains will be coordinating all orders for the ACE Trains E/47 British Railways Standard Class 5MT stock, priced at a competitive figure of £695.00 each (+P&P). As is normal with ACE Trains, a healthy production run is planned. However, stocks of the BR(S) Arthurian named locos are restricted, so it’s a case of first come first served with orders. Full details are now listed on the Shamrock Trains site: https://shamrocktrains.com/product/ace-trains-e-47-br-standard-class-5-locomotive/ First deliveries anticipated late summer 2026.

The ‘Riddles’ Racer’ video will be posted on to the site in due course.

The British Railways (BR) Standard Class 5MT 4-6-0 was designed as a more economical and high-speed locomotive than the earlier LMS Stanier Class 4-6-0 from which it took its roots.
