Rhiannon: The Goddess Who Could Not Be Caught

Who was Rhiannon?

Was she a medieval Welsh Queen… or was she a far older Celtic Goddess? I remember the first time she came to me, and opened a doorway into her world, it was on a small island which was in itself otherworldly, I walked out one early morning in a woodland to see a carpet of bluebells, it was breathtaking - then a beautiful white horse came running towards me. It was surreal and magical. I was on the island for a week, and every morning and evening when I went for a walk the horse ran to me. That was my introduction to Rhiannon. That was 25 years ago but I still remember the woodland bluebells and still have a photo of that horse on my notice board today which I have posted in the comments.

Walk with The Wise Women as we journey into the pages of The Mabinogion to uncover the story of the mysterious woman and the impossible chase, Rhiannon, who arrived on a white horse, moving so slowly that no rider could catch her. Along the way, we consider the parallels with the Irish Goddess Macha and look at the often linked Celtic horse Goddess Epona. Are these separate deities, or echoes of older traditions that once stretched across the Celtic world?

is often called the love stone, but its magic goes much deeper than romance.

In witchcraft, rose quartz is the stone of the heart after it has been bruised, broken, hardened, or closed. It is not only used to attract love from another person. It is used to return love to the self.

This is the crystal you reach for when you are learning how to soften again without becoming weak.

Rose quartz carries a gentle, watery, heart-centred energy. It is often used in spells for self-love, emotional healing, forgiveness, grief work, compassion, friendship, peace after conflict, and opening the heart after pain. It does not force the heart open. It sits beside it like a candle in a dark room, reminding it that tenderness can still exist.

Witches use rose quartz in charm bags, bath rituals, candle spells, altar work, sleep magic, and healing grids. It can be placed under a pillow for emotional dreams, held during grief rituals, carried after heartbreak, or used in spell jars for peace and reconciliation.

For self-love magic, rose quartz can be paired with pink candles, honey, rose petals, lavender, vanilla, moon water, and written affirmations. For grief work, it can be held against the chest while speaking the name of what was lost. For forgiveness, it can be used not to excuse what happened, but to release the poison of carrying it forever.

That is the deeper magic of rose quartz.
