GringoFairtrade

GringoFairtrade Fairtrade handmade clothing, accessories & gifts. Made fairly, Worn freely. Since 1984. Gr**go is a small family run business based in sunny Swansea, South wales.

Established over 20 years ago whilst owners Deb and Dave were traveling extensively through Europe, North Africa, Asia, the Americas and finally Australia. Whilst travelling in Mexico in the mid 80s, they bought handmade jewellery from families in a small dusty Mexican village, and started wholesaling the jewellery in Australia, and from there Gr**go was born. The wholesale business grew rapidly a

nd they turned their hand to clothing and bag design, and set up small workshop under their house in Australia making the clothes themselves. The demand for their unusual clothing soon outgrew what they could make, so they returned to their beloved island of Bali, and working with Balinese friends they had made previously, they started making the clothing and bags. From the beginning they ensured that all the people involved in the production of their goods were paid fairly and have always adhered to their business principles of "Aid through Trade". Gr**go moved to the UK where the business has grown dramatically, and products are now produced in Nepal and India, as well as Bali. Their original business motto was, and still is today, to pay a fair price for their goods, and sell them for a fair price, so the local artisans benefit through their labour and skills.

Fairtrade Value 3. Fair Working Conditions.

We visit Nepal, India, Bali and Thailand. At least once a year, often twice. And when we go, we don’t just meet our suppliers for a coffee and tick a box. We go to the factories. We go to the family homes. We sit with the people making our goods and we work alongside them.

When we’re sampling a new collection we’re doing it right there, in the same space where everything is made. Not in a hotel. Not on a video call. Actually there. We watch them cut the fabric. We see them adjust it. If we want something stone washed or tie dyed we go and watch that process too. We see everything. Nothing is hidden from us and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

The places we work with are small scale. Always. A lot of our goods are made by small family businesses. Adults who have been doing this their whole lives, making things by hand. Carving, cutting, sewing. These are artists. Not factory workers feeding fabric into a machine.

We don’t work with big factories. We never have. We don’t deal in thousands of one item. A hundred pieces is often our maximum order. That’s just the scale we work at and the scale we choose to work at. No excessive hours. Ever. No forced labour. The people we work with want to be there. The vibes, honestly, are very chill. And if someone needs time off for a religious holiday or an important cultural event, that’s just respected. It’s their life, not just their job.

Some of our suppliers we’ve been working with for twenty years. You don’t stay with people that long without knowing exactly how they operate. If we ever see something we’re not happy with we call it out straight away. And if something isn’t right and doesn’t change, we walk away. Simple as that. We
wouldn’t continue working with anyone where we had any doubts about how their people are being treated.

Clean. Safe. Small scale. That’s what we look for and that’s what we find.

Fair Working Conditions. Because how something is made matters just as much as what it is.

Gr**go Fairtrade Value #2. Fair People.

We don’t discriminate. Not on gender, not on religion, not on anything. If someone makes great goods and treats their workers well, we work with them. It really is that simple.

Men and women are paid equally across everything we do. Always have been. We have suppliers who are all male, suppliers who are all female, and everything in between. We don’t mind either way. What we care about is that the people doing the work are treated right.

We also have women only cooperatives we work with. Small groups of women making felt, who go to work, earn their own money and contribute to their families. That matters to us. A lot.

We visit our suppliers. We go to the factories, we see where the goods are made, we meet the people making them. But it goes further than that. These are people we’ve known for years. Decades in some cases. We’ve been to their homes. We’ve had dinner with their families. We go out together when we’re there. They’re not just suppliers. They’re people we genuinely like spending time with.

Most of our goods are made by small family groups. Brothers, sisters, people who live and work together making things by hand. Just like us really. Gr**go is a mum, a dad, a brother and a sister all working together. Small scale. Family run. Same as them.

Fair People. Because who makes it matters just as much as what they make.

Yesterday I posted our Fair Pay values post. My brother Toby called me out on it. Wasn’t good enough for Gr**go. I leaned on AI to help and it showed. Fair enough. Time is sacred to me right now with an eight month old but I agree. I must do better.

That’s what we do. If something isn’t right, we say so. And then we do it better.

So. Fair Pay. Properly this time.

We pay a deposit the moment we place an order with every supplier. 30 to 40%. The rest is paid before the goods even leave the country. Our suppliers never wait. Never chase. The money is there. Sometimes we’re paying months before the goods are even on their way to us. It can make things tight on our end but that’s our problem not theirs.

We never haggle on price either. The way it works is we give our suppliers the designs, they make the samples, the samples come to us and we check everything. The quality, the fit, the colours, every detail. And then we see the price. Not before. After. If it works for us, brilliant. If it’s too expensive, we don’t go back and try to grind them down. We just don’t run it. We keep the sample, sell it as a one off, and move on. That’s it. No pressure. No squeezing.

These aren’t faceless factories either. These are skilled people. Cutting fabric by hand, stitching by hand, putting everything together by hand. They know exactly what they’re doing and they’ve been doing it for years. That kind of skill deserves to be paid properly. Every time.

And most of our suppliers we’ve been working with for ten, twenty, thirty years. Some of them since Deb and Dave started Gr**go back in 1984. You don’t keep relationships like that by treating people badly.

We also offer thirty days credit to a lot of our shops. So yes, sometimes the cash flow is a juggle. But we’d rather feel that pressure ourselves than pass it down the line to the people making our goods.

Fair Pay. Since 1984. Long before it was a label.
