This week, we're celebrating Stephen Hughes Ltd as the jewellery shop celebrates 30 years in Swansea 🥳
Read Stephen Hughes’ story:
"Thirty years. When I say it out loud, I’m not entirely sure where the time has gone.
"My journey into jewellery certainly wasn’t planned. I left school at 16 without really knowing what I wanted to do and ended up with two interviews: one in a sweet shop and one in a jewellery shop. Thankfully for my waistline, the jewellery shop won.
"I started at the bottom, spending time at the jewellery and watch benches before moving into retail. I was lucky to meet Eric Coleman the manager of a jewellery shop, who became my mentor and taught me as much about people and life as he did about jewellery.
"After working around the country, I eventually arrived in Swansea and, 30 years ago, decided to go it alone.
"Stephen Hughes Fine Diamonds began in Portland Street, with some of our earliest meetings taking place around my kitchen table. Neil, who is still the store’s manager, joined me right at the beginning and together we built the foundations of the business we have today.
"A lot has changed since 1996, but at heart, what we do hasn’t. We’re jewellers, not simply retailers of jewellery. Whether we’re creating something bespoke, remodelling an inherited piece or helping someone choose a ring, it’s about creating something that will be treasured for years.
"Over three decades, we’ve been privileged to become part of so many people’s stories; engagements, anniversaries, celebrations and family jewellery passed from one generation to the next. That trust is something I never take for granted.
"Swansea has become home too. My three boys were born here and we’ve supported Swansea Rugby Club for the best part of 30 years.
"I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built and grateful to everyone who has been part of it. After 30 years, I’m still just as excited about what comes next."
