May is a tricky month for locally grown flowers, after the tulips and narcissi finish and before our spring sown flowers are blooming. However, by the end of May we can almost always pick a few roses for our weddings, along with a selection of “wildflowers” including sweet rocket, campion, cornflowers, Orlaya, mint and grasses.

We added Cornish sweet Williams and peonies from and local antirrhinums grown less than half a mile from the venue.

There’s been quite a lot of coverage of British Flower farming via our friends at RHS Chelsea Flower Show this week, so it’s great to be able to showcase just how gorgeous seasonal and locally grown flowers can be.

* We did buy in 1 bunch of Dutch peonies, and some Italian eucalyptus foliage, but overall the wedding was about 90% British, and most definitely seasonal.

It’s great to be picking again and we’ll be adding more of our own grown in the weeks ahead.

It’s been a busy few weeks on the flower farm. We’ve created ten new beds and planted 500 seedlings with 2000 still to go!

Your Friday flower fix is Longton. We are really in love with this weekend’s posies and bouquets which feature plenty of local and other British grown blooms.

Today’s £15 special bouquet features Tarleton grown snapdragons, mint, frothy Orlaya ( like the cow parsley in the hedgerows but more sophisticated!), and British grown scented stocks.

Please be aware that is tomorrow so Liverpool Road will be closed from 11am-1pm, so get to Booths today or early tomorrow if you can.

We are celebrating a big step forward in our sustainability journey this week, with our newly signwritten electric van.

As a rural business we spend a lot of time delivering across quite a large area along the A59 between Aughton and Penwortham. The greenhouse gas emissions do add up, so we have been wanting to make this change for a while. We also use electricity from renewable sources, so it’s as sustainable a choice as possible for us. We continue to expand our growing so that our summer bouquets can have the lowest possible carbon footprint from field to vase.

If you’re in our delivery area, we’d love to bring you our flowers this summer. We have a special offer on summer flower subscriptions until Monday 4th May. Get a monthly bouquet for 3 months for £65 by emailing us at [email protected] and putting SUMMER26 in the title

Huge thanks to Melissa for the design on the van and very prompt completion of the work

Don’t delay, book your monthly flower fix today!

Sustainable floristry is now a global network of florists committed to more planet and nature friendly approaches to the cut flower business.

has led the way in establishing training, accreditation and resources for florists who want to make better choices for their business.

I’m very proud to be able to display this badge as an SFN member and am looking forward to another year of learning and challenging the status quo for a sustainable future for our industry. I’m inspired by the leadership shown by members around the world which makes me hopeful that change is not only possible, but already here.
For our business it means:
- avoiding air freighted flowers (less than 5% of our purchases)
- choosing certified flowers grown to high environmental standards
- lobbying for more information on the flowers we buy from wholesalers
- growing more of our own flowers to eliminate inorganic fertilisers, pesticides and peat use
- arranging with the seasons
- not using floral foam (even the ones being promoted as environmentally friendly are STILL plastic)
- Composting our green waste

As ever, there are always ways to improve but our business is radically different than it was 15 years ago and we will strive to improve and continue our journey towards sustainability every year.

We’ve been back at the bench this week after a hugely busy Mothers Day weekend, making bouquets every day for Longton store. If you swipe through the photos you can see how our bouquets change through the week as we select the best of the market daily for you

Spring bouquets are a joy to make and we are counting down the days to having our own tulips to pick.

For now, we have some lovely narcissi and alstromeria from and voluptuous Dutch double tulips and scented Italian stocks from

Seasonal flowers will always be our first choice and as the days lengthen and warmer weather returns we will be looking forward to incorporating our own and other locally grown flowers into our weddings, events, farewells and retail bouquets.
