In any event - the story so far.

​For a long time - for me - there has been the growing fantasy of running a bookshop. A second-hand book shop for curious minds. (A few of you knew already; you know who you are. Thank you for the faith.) Say hello to Fables. My new baby. Passion meeting reality with a side helping of planning. It’s first year will be online; it’s first weeks will be logging stock. The practical part of this is a collections diary. If you have books that you no longer love or need, please get in touch and book a slot – we offer a free appraisal and we’ll pay cash on the day for any books we buy. TUESDAY

Shall henceforth be known as new cake day and we’d like to welcome this little (plant based) gem to the shelves.

The sponge base is in Nigella’s sumptuous chocolate sponge topped off with a smooth cocoa based icing. And sprinkles, because what self respecting cake isn’t improved by sprinkles.

Truly we’re just here for the books but cake makes everything better.

When they’re gone, there’s no more. But there’s plenty of coffee and thinking biscuits.

A lazy play on words as we’ve just received a couple of copies of Elizabeth Strout’s 2026 novel “The Things We Never Say”.

One of the copies is a customer order and the other one’s going on the shelves this morning.

THERE AND BACK AGAIN

This week's window is a collection of books about travelling and all it can bring. Some follow fictional travellers as they reach new lands and personal understanding. Others provide routes that might form the pathways of your own adventures.

Many of these stories are about changing as well as travelling. The protagonist goes out into the world, pauses, then looks back and realises that they (or perhaps home) is not as they remember it. That is to say, go out into the world curious, open to how it might change you.

Adventure with hope. To see how far it is.

IF YOU WANT THE RAINBOW, YOU GOTTA PUT UP WITH THE RAIN

There’s been a fair few tributes paid to Dolly Parton by the media; all of them thoroughly deserved. The quote above comes from the BBC’s article. We watched the movie 9-5 last night in memory of Dolly Parton. (If tears had been needed it would have been Steel Magnolias.)

My own wet feet on opening up today have trailed in dust and mud; I’m glad that the need for rain is (partly) answered. Happy to have to mop; glad for the wet, glad to have a shop to mop, glad for the stories in the books, glad for all the stories you all bring of your books and lives.

There’s so much about Dolly Parton’s story that speaks of the value of doing the work; turning up as your best self and holding others up in the process. Especially her Imagination Library, an early years reading programme, holding open doors into literacy for so many across the UK and elsewhere.

Our loyalty card scheme starts today. To honour a great lady each children’s card started before the end of September we’ll start with a free book.
