The absolutely FaBULOUS and incredibly talented Mary-Jane's Originals popped in to my shop today and I could not resist getting a photo! Check out that dress!! And Yes, OF COURSE she made it!….featuring the seamstress scene from Disney’s Cinderella, Mary-Jane made the dress from a pair of old curtains!!!

If you need alterations, garment remodelling and custom design Mary-Jane originals is your lady! Look for the giant pink button down Riverside Place between the Butchers and Tap One!

Quick question….If Sunday parking charges were to come in to Taunton but the charge was a reasonable all day charge of, let’s say £3.50….would that still put you off coming in? Is there an amount that you WOULD be prepared to pay?
The proposals on the table at the moment would mean an all day charge of either £8.90 or £12.50 (depending on the tier of car park) Monday - Sunday…..I’ve spoken to a few customers about this and most have said they’d be ok paying a lower price for all day on a Sunday…one charge for the whole day and cheaper than the Monday to Saturday….Frome currently has a few car parks that have a separate all day charge for a Sunday…priced at £2.30 for the day on Sundays…under the new proposals their Sunday all day rate would go from £2.30 to £8.90….a massive increase and one that would no doubt impact their famous independent market.

Imagine if the charge for parking on a Sunday was a reasonable one….people would use the car parks, create a revenue for somerset council and NOT respond to high charges by seeking free parking in side streets and using residential parking…the money that would have to be spent to paint more yellow lines, implement Sunday residential permits and update signage could be saved??

I’m sure it’s more complicated and there are no simple solutions but I want to keep the conversation going. The impact of the proposed changes to parking throughout the county will be huge and could be detrimental to many businesses. The high street isn’t dying but it is more delicate than ever.

I love match days in the quarter, there’s an undeniable buzz…also great to see so many people using the boulevard this morning AS WELL as using station Road.

Thanks to the County Gazette for sharing this good news story…3 out of 8 of the finalists in the British Independent Retailers Association - Bira “Love your High Streets” awards are from Somerset!!
AND I’ve just discovered (through reading this article) that there were over 600 entries nationwide!!!!!
So now I’m even more chuffed that Rocket and Bird is one of those final 8!!

5 years ago today this project was completed by the wonderful Jacks & Stripes!!! Covering the “rusty planters” with directional signage and giving them a tidy up….these before and after photos show the massive difference that was made.

The planters were only meant to be a temporary solution to the road closure and I’m still hoping for that archway across the street 😉
