The Shropshire Seaweed Company Organic seaweed fertiliser & soil improvers, made in Shropshire for healthier soil and plants. Helping UK gardeners grow the natural way since 2005.

Everything we make helps build healthy, living soil, because strong plants start from the ground up. Over 100 miles from the nearest coastline, Shropshire is the last place you'd expect to find a company that makes products from seaweed. When we tell local people what we do, they often look at us like we're completely mad! However, here in the heart of rural England, we do think we know a thing or two about organic living and 'the good life' - which is what drove us to develop our seaweed product range.

There’s a reason our seaweed is a different colour, a different texture and a different scent to other brands on the shelf.

And it’s not just how it looks. It performs differently too.

A moment of appreciation for dahlias, from bud to full bloom and deadheading 🌸 (Scroll to see the magic unfurl)

We may only have a few weeks left until the first frost, so we’re making the most of every last bud and bloom.

Part 1 of our frass and microgreens trial 🌱

It’s just a small pinch of frass, added to a jar of microgreen seeds, to see what it can really do. We’ve been putting frass through its paces this year for growing roses, keeping slugs away from plants, improving your soil, and now, Jess is testing the effectiveness of frass for growing Microgreens.

What we’ve been looking out for:
• Moisture retention
• Growth rate
• Roots
• Yield
• Health

Check back tomorrow to see the first results.

Two olive trees, planted a metre apart. Six weeks ago, this one was on its last legs.

Now look at it. New shoots on every branch, fresh leaves appearing every week, and the brown, crispy foliage replaced with vibrant green. It’s coming back stronger than ever.

Here’s how we got here, week by week:
Week 1: Trimmed back the damage and watered deeply
Week 2: Fed with organic seaweed, after watering so it could be properly absorbed
Week 3: Topped up the compost and added frass for better moisture retention in future
Weeks 4-6: Let nature take its course

Water first, feed second, then patience.

Want your flowers to last longer? 💐

A few simple habits can make a real difference to how long your blooms stay fresh and beautiful.

🪣 Condition homegrown flowers. After cutting, leave them in a bucket of water in a cool, dark spot for 2–24 hours before arranging.
✂️ Prepare your stems. Trim them at an angle and remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline.
🌸 Arrange with care. Use a clean vase and give your stems a little room so they’re not overcrowded.
🌱 Add flower food. It helps keep the water fresh and feeds your flowers as they drink.
🥀 Remove dying flowers. Check every few days and take out anything past its best to keep the rest looking fresh.

Save this for the next time you bring flowers home! What’s your favourite flower to keep in a vase? Let us know below. 👇

Do you condition your homegrown flowers before you arrange them? Here’s how to give them the best chance of a week or more in your display 🌸

Before they reach the vase, a few simple steps make all the difference:
• Cut the longest stems you can
• Strip the lower leaves
• Stand them in a clean bucket of fresh, cool water for a minimum of 2 hours before arranging

Part 2, how to make your cut flowers last longer, is out tomorrow 🌸

Ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at TSSC?

Stew and Dave hand bottle and fill every bottle and bag. Since January this year, they have decanted more than 50,000 litres of seaweed, and bagged over 5 tonnes of frass.

And that’s just one part of the job. Between packing orders, they’re developing new products, building partnerships, answering customer calls, sorting logistics, working on the website and everything in between.

We’re a small team, and it’s all hands on deck. But working this close to our products and customers means we understand the process end to end, and that shapes every decision we make.

This season’s been our busiest yet. Orders will slow for autumn and winter, but the work won’t stop, we’ve got plans underway for 2027, and we’ll be ready to do it all again. 🌱

Are you happiest behind a camera, turning stories into content people can’t stop watching? Do you want to make something people actually remember?

We’re looking for a Junior Media Producer to join The Shropshire Seaweed Company and help shape the future of our brand.

This isn’t a role for churning out the same posts on repeat. One day you could be filming a product’s story, the next you could be interviewing a grower, recording a podcast or shooting a mini-documentary. You’ll have the freedom to bring your own ideas, work directly with our leadership team, and build a creative identity for a growing British brand in sustainable gardening and agriculture.

🎬 Reels, YouTube, podcasts & documentaries
💡 Freedom to pitch your own ideas
🚐 Travel to gardens, events & partner sites
🌱 No gardening expertise or formal experience needed

Self-taught? Film everything on your phone? Limited experience? We care more about your ideas and attitude than your CV. Head to our bio to find out more!

Help us find new talent, tag someone who would be perfect for this role!

Come and help us create something people remember. 💚

If your dahlias are starting to slow down, they might not be finished. They could just be setting seed.

When a flower fades, the plant puts its energy into making seed. Once it does that, it stops making new buds. Snip off the spent heads and that energy goes back into flowering. With dahlias, that can keep the blooms coming right up to the first frost.

How to tell them apart:
🌸 Spent heads are cone-shaped and pointed
🌱 New buds are round and tight

Follow the stem down to the next pair of leaves or a side shoot, and cut just above it. Do this once or twice a week and you’ll get more flowers, on longer stems, for weeks.

It works for cosmos, roses, sweet peas and most annuals too. Save this for your next walk round the garden.
