Garden Jobs For January 🥶
1. Protect Plants from Frost ❄️
Frost Protection: Protect tender plants from frost by covering them with fleece, bubble wrap, or a cloche. This is particularly important for more delicate plants like some perennials, new growth on shrubs, or newly planted trees.
If you have young trees or those with thin bark, wrap them to protect from frost.
2. Prune Trees and Shrubs 🌿
Prune Dormant Shrubs: January is a good time to prune deciduous trees and shrubs while they are dormant, before new growth starts in spring. You can prune things like wisteria, apple trees, and roses. Avoid hard pruning evergreen shrubs in January, as they can be more vulnerable to frost damage
3. Tidy Up the Garden 🍂
Clear Leaves and Debris: Use our leaf vacuum to collect up any fallen leaves on paths.
If you didn't manage to cut back your perennial plants in autumn, now is a good time to tidy them up. Remove dead stems, but leave seed heads if you want to attract birds to your garden.
4. Indoor Gardening 🏠
For early spring crops or flowers, start seeds indoors in seed trays or pots. Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Peppers and Aubergines can be started indoors. You may need a grow light and a heat mat.
If your houseplants have outgrown their pots, it’s a good time to repot them while they’re in their dormant phase.
5. Wildlife Support 🦉
Continue feeding birds with high-energy food like suet, fat balls, peanuts, and sunflower seeds. A birdbath or water source will also attract birds during the winter.
Leave small areas of your garden undisturbed, such as piles of leaves or logs, to create shelters for hedgehogs and other wildlife.
6. Check Garden Tools and Equipment 😊
Clean, sharpen, and oil garden tools to ensure they’re ready for the busy spring season.
If you have lawnmowers or other powered garden equipment, take them in for a service or carry out any basic maintenance like cleaning the air filter or checking the oil.
