A long one - but close to my heart...
Why I Attend Craft Fairs
I've been thinking: in the age of "one-click" ordering and next-day delivery, trekking to a local market might seem like a lot of effort. Why put on actual trousers and navigate a car park when you could shop from your sofa in your PJs?
Well, after a weekend spent at The Craft and Makers Market, I’ve remembered exactly why.
1. You Can’t "Add to Basket" a Conversation
At a craft fair, you aren’t just buying a product; you’re meeting the person who poured their heart into making it. Take my stall, for instance. Standing there, surrounded by vibrant fused glass rainbows, you get to hear the story behind the shimmer. You learn that these pieces were "hand-crafted in Shropshire," not in a massive factory. There’s a certain magic in knowing the hands that fused that glass also packed your bag.
2. The "Ooh, Shiny!" Factor (Literally)
Screens are great, but they lie. A photo can’t quite capture the way light dances through a piece of fused glass or the tactile texture of a hand-poured candle.
There’s a genuine joy in wandering through rows of stalls and seeing something catch the light—like a tiny glass bird or a bold, abstract suncatcher—and thinking, "That’s the one." It’s a sensory experience that an algorithm simply can’t replicate.
3. Finding the "Un-findable"
We’ve all been there: you need a gift for the person who has everything. You could get them another generic gift voucher, or you could find a bespoke piece of glass art that no one else on their street owns. Craft fairs are the ultimate treasure hunts for the unique, the quirky, and the "where on earth did you get that?"
4. Supporting the "Little Guy"
Every time you buy a pair of dichroic glass earrings or a quirky plant pot decoration, you’re helping a small business keep the lights on. You’re supporting a dream, a craft, and a local community. It feels a lot better than contributing to a billionaire’s next space flight, doesn’t it? (Just saying Elon!)
5. The Atmosphere (and the Cake)
Let’s not forget the secondary benefits. The hum of chatter, the inevitable stalls selling home-baked brownies. Craft fairs are a social event—a chance to slow down, have a wander, and appreciate the immense talent tucked away in our local corners.
The Verdict
So, next time you see a banner for a local makers' market, don't just drive past. Pull over, grab a reusable bag, and go for a wander. You might just find a piece of handcrafted Shropshire glass that makes your windowsill look a million times better—and you’ll definitely leave with a bit more soul than you started with.
